someone mentioned Hans Zimmer so I have to get specific here...try 'hummel gets the rockets' from the rock soundtrack, also 'roll tide' from crimson tide...and the music from thin red line- 'journey to the line' my brother and I went to gettysburg battlefield in 2006 and I mixed a zimmer cd that we played as we drove there from the hotel and at the site itself. man, that music gave me goosebumps as I imagined what took place there in 1863. Zimmer is the best at capturing the essence of war in musical form. Yes, Williams is good but he's a bit more hollywoody in his interpretations. Wagners 'siegfrieds funeral music' works well as war music as does Orff's 'o fortuna' from the carmina burana. I love this category...what a great question this was:D

Saw " Gladiator" (2000) last night and I still love the battle theme. I also have the whole soundtrack.

Heres a few but, not WWII war movies themes.

Some I really like are the theme to Fort Apache.

The theme for The Horse Soldiers & Escape From Fort Bravo: "Yellow Stripes" by: Stan Jones.

The theme to: They Died With Their Boots on & The Fighting 69th, which is: Garry Owen."

To completely hijack this thread, I'm pretty sure I had a relative (ancestor, what have you) that fought for the British at Rourkes Drift. I'm pretty we don't share the same last name, but i think he was related to my grandmothers side of the family.

As a marching member for four years and a musician for eight year sometimes I just like band arrangements. My personal favorites are the theme songs to The Bridge Over the River Kwai, The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far and The Great Escape. Of the overall soundtracks, I have the complete soundtracks to Gettysburg, Band of Brothers, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima on my ipod. As a trumpet player, I managed to figure out the main theme to Letters From Iwo Jima on my Trumpet, which is a real treat to play.

You might be happy to know that there is a CD that exists that has your favorites on it. I'll post the info for it in a seperate thread next time I can come visit this site. All I know off-hand is that it was originally released in 1994 but I know is still available.

"Glory" would be on of my favourites, the Harlem Boys choir sing beautifully on it. Another would be "A Bridge too Far", great tune.

My number one used to be the theme from "Patton", but having finally got around to seeing "Glory" I'd say that has taken top place. Sends tingles down my spine every time I hear it.

    Aside from that:

    • The Longest Day (the song and the march that accompanies the opening scenes, which irritatingly I can't find anywhere)
    • The Bridge at Remagen
    • Das Boot
    • Zulu
He was also far from the seeming lecherous drunken misfit he is portrayed in the film, in fact he was quite a mild, upstanding soldier. The portrayal of him did not go down well with his descendants.

It's very stirring, I like that scene, but it's also utter tosh. At that time the 24th Regiment of Foot was designated the 2nd Warwickshires, it became the South Wales Borderers (not the Welsh Guards) in 1881, and the majority of recruits were English. I also doubt if any of the defenders of Rorke's Drift would have been singing as the Zulus came on. If you visit rorkesdriftvc (link included) you will find a section on the stories that have grown up about the battle: rorkesdriftvc.com - Popular Myths

YouTube - Das Boot (Tipperary Song)

The only music I ever bought was the Das Boot film score. As pointed out on this thread there are some good themes out there.

My three part SH3 The Boat film has the Das Boot music in it. See Simulations & Gaming Forum, Videos Thread.

    That's Smokey Robinson, Wilts.

This may be a little obscure for some, but my favorite is the theme for Ken Burns Documentary "The Civil War." It's called Ashokan Farewell and it was written by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. When they read the Sullivan Ballou letter with Farewell playing in the background...Well, you'd just have to hear it.

Oops, thought I had already done so? I'll get to it within the next few days because I forgot to bring the paper with the info w/ me. :headbash:

One of my all-time most favorites is the music from: The Alamo. "The Green Leaves of Summer" in particular.

    Bonnie Blue Flag, is another.

Conquest from Captain From Castille by Alfred Newman would have been #1 answer to this question until the mid seventies.

Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia would have come in close with Battle of Brittain a close runner up.

At some point "The Wind and the Lion" would have entered in and "Patton".

Nowadays most people don't know who Max steiner, Miklos Rosza and Franz Waxman are, let alone Alfred Newman (isn't he the guy who wrote those songs from Toy Story?).
