Company of Heroes, while fun, is one of those game where 'Rush Tactics' ruin it. It really doesn't take much skill at all. Hearts of Iron, on a grander scale, takes a lot of planning. Despite the fact that i've conquered Africa (for all intents and purposes) and the Germans captured Moscow, we only have maybe a 30% chance of winning since the US has already DOW'd us.

There are so many categories that those games fill, its hard to say. Combat Mission series, is a cross between Turn Based and Real Time. You issue orders, but then watch for 60 seconds as they are carried out. Units react as the battlefield changes, and the Chain of Command comes into play. No stopping after 20 seconds to issue new orders as a Panzer is sighted. One of the best games i've ever played. CMBO, CMBB, CMAK - anyone ever want a game, let me know!

Panzer General 2 for take turns, I know it's an old game now but still a good game to play. Defending the Reich campaign which is the hardest took me years to do.

Other games I play are those free games based on the old Dos Steel Panthers series which are all so take turns. Two versions WW2 & Post WW2 to modern day. Or so enjoy the Combat Flight Series from time to time just a shame I could not get to grips with the IL2 series.

My number one game which takes the bulk of my gaming time is Silent Hunter 3 GWX2.1 and in second place Silent Hunter 4.

    Ha!
As any experienced CoH gamer will know, that it does take a lot of skill, especially in MP. You need to get to know every unit's strengths and weaknesses, and know the features of every map too; the one you forget about is the one you opponent will capitalise on.
Though in SP, anyone could play it.

I've just realised something, this is a 'best' thread, so we're bound to have arguments. That's why I try to make 'favourite' ones instead.

I enjoy COH, but think of it more like a Starcraft type game then anything. You're not really limited by anything, and to win its just a matter of overpowering/outnumbering your foe in areas to push him back and cut off his resources.

It could be that i haven't played many MP games, so haven't experienced any gamey tactics yet, but the AI is so easy...and as Cam can attest too, my Howitzers are DEADLY.

I think the population cap is waaayy to severely limiting, on 75 in Vire river valley! By the time you have got your defences up you can't build anything else!

And yes, howitzers are deadly. :)
(Note:especially lots of them. 2 Preists and 2 25pdrs = Dead Germans. Lots of them.)

The original Wolf3D is only a WWII game by strict definition, but it was a great run and gun shooter. By 1992 standards it made your head spin and had surround sound!

Panzer General and Panzer General II were quite solid. Maybe a bit overly simplistic, but the gameplay was quite engaging.

Aces of the Pacific and the almost as good sequel Aces Over Europe were the first truly great WWII air combat sims. A game in the campaign mode could last for months, in real time.

As Mussolini previously attested to, Call of Duty: United Offensive is absolutely fantastic. Some of the best online games I've ever had is in the intense base assault mode. I've played online with Mussolini, he is a very, very good player to have on your side. ;)

The Combat Mission series is superb, and especially great if you don't have multiple hours to commit to a game. PBEM mode allows you to play a couple turns, send them off and return whenever you like for more action. A great option for multi-taskers like myself.

There are of course more, but these are the ones off the top of my head...

From my standpoint, especially to play what if's, I like the Steel Panthers World at War and SP WWII games. Both are current (updates for latest Windows versions) and can be found, and downloaded - FREE) at several sites.

Y'know, it's a pity this is "best WW2 game", as my current two favourite games at the moment contain Abrams MBTs...

I really hate to say it, but I have played CoH to death now, and should be a while before I play it again. (i.e. When I have forgotten how to play it)

How about tabletop or map WWII games before the advent of the PC?
Avalon Hill and TSR had great games and before the PC, I'd say the best I've played is TSR's WWII ETO. It was a monster game that could accommodate easily up to eight players. Another one was TSR's Cobra, which was expandable to include the D-Day landings.
Strategy and Tactics magazine also featured small wargames. Unfortunately, the favorite for me is Operation Libya and the Korean War, which were not WWII games.
Oh yeah, if anyone remembers the old Patton Vs. Rommel dos game, it wasn't the best but it sure was funny with old Patton or Rommel chewing out the player when the player does something crazy or stupid.

I've definitely enjoyed the CoD and MoH series...hard for me to pick one that is haed-and-shoulders above the rest, though. I do prefer the first-person shooters over the simulation games.

I didn't, how does that fit in a ww2 best game catagory?

The commando series were pretty good, well until the third one.

I have this game, called combat wings. It is a ww2 BoB based game, where you are a pilot for the RAF during the BoB, Now for some reason when you take of to intercept bombers coming over the channel, whether you are a spitfire or a hurricane you are equipped with around 12 rockets and 8 bombs? Why, do you want the bombs to take on fighters and bombers, and I didn't think the rockets were ready that early? Oh and your plane can turn on the spot apparently. lol

Sgt.Pepper (Cam) had lots of pesky infantry. I built a second Howitzer near middle of map and figured out, based on looking at map, where he was amassing his infantry. So i fired into the fog of war and low and behold- lots of green +exp signs popped up! Direct hit! That was the end for him, as i slowly tightened the noose. I bombarded his base with 2 more howitzers (built within range of it of course) and finally destroyed him with my Churchills.

I do agree - we must get more people here to get online and play! COD UO is great!
