I have to agree with you there, that movie was horrible and the duel probably never happened. Read the book of the same title, great book but the account of that duel (blue-blood prussian officer v. simple shepard sniper) is likely Soviet propaganda.

Sophie Scholl, we need more movies of this type to show the naysayers that NOT ALL GERMANS WERE NAZIS. Particularly facinating was the protrayal of Judge Freisler, whom many of us has likely seen black and white footage of the Valkrie trials of his beratements. This color film shows the color of Freisler's robes in vivid detail. Teufel?

    As to the ones that I find outstanding;
Stalingrad~the film is starkingly similar to images of Die Deutche Wochenshau
Sophie Scholl, the final days~for reasons I mentioned in my last post
Talvisota~a Finnish film depicting brave Finland against the Soviet onslaught
Rukajärven Tie~another Finnish film depicting the Jatkosota that took place two years later
Sieg im Westen~many will discount as merely propaganda, but excellent video of the fall of France
Feuertaup~another of the german war films, Luftwaffe operations in Poland, another with the same ops is Feldzing im Polen
Im Kampf Gegen Den Weltfeind~interesting film of operations during the Spanish Civil War.
Heer im Werden~is another of my favorites

If anyone wants to have fun, create an account on IMDB, and search out your favorite war movies. There are truly some twits wasting bandwidth on there that wouldn't know history if it bit them in the butt.

I always say, if you're making a movie about a historical event, get the historical event right, then worry about the acting and film making.

got to say saving private ryan, bad plot once they the took beach, but ground breaking special effects bringing the horror of war home, for sheer entertainment value i would rather watch kellys heroes or murphys war.

    My Personal Top 5:

    1. Saving Private Ryan
    2. Der Untergang/Downfall (especially the extended cut--that made it even better)
    3. A Bridge Too Far
    4. Defiance (there aren't enough good Eastern Front films out there...)
    5. The Pianist

Close calls/honorable mentions: To Hell and Back (pretty much a tie for the number 5 slot--Audie Murphy has about the best personal story of all time), Battleground, Patton, Tora! Tora! Tora!. And a note to Der Untergang--I'd argue that it might be the most historically accurate WWII film ever made...quite possible--the film crew took few liberties.

Right off the top I have to say THE DAMBUSTERS and THE CRUEL SEA.
The British know how to make historically accurate movies that are also interesting.

The American classic TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH. Possibly my favorite of all time.

Another surprisingly good film is OBJECTIVE BURMA with Errol Flynn. In almost all his movies his character wins all the battles singlehandedly and never makes a mistake but here he plays a commander who leads his men on a raid against the Japanese and he only fires his weapon twice. He has to make difficult choices and makes mistakes and is filled with doubt at times. It is a very good movie, especially for being made in 1945.

Why on this thread is not found mention of the movie "The Thin Red Line"?
I think it is not deserved. In my opinion, this is a very realistic movie. It is well shot and has a deeper meaning. I've watched it several times. And this film is well known in Russia.
So, my list of best WWII movies looks like (apart from the «Saving Private Ryan»):

The Dawns Here Are Quiet (Russia) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068161/
The Thin Red Line (USA) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120863/
    Stalingrad (Germany) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108211/
In August, 44 th (Russia) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284595/

And the film, that was released recently - «Brest fortress» is deserved a mention here.
