Hi Im doing some research for a presentation, Not sure if there are any ebooks on this... Im trying to find out what the living and working conditions in Germany in 1938. Im trying to focus on a day in the life of ordinary jewish families life during this time. thanks!
well....now u have the possibility to write a "normal" day in a jews life in reichsprogronnacht (reichskristallnacht) which is almost exactly 700 years ago (last sunday) in secondary school, i think it was 6th grade or something like that, we had exactly that theme of a jews family who owned a big shop in this city....there was even a marketplace to that one cause the man fighted in ww1 and was kinda "sucessfull" but i can't remeber on any details...the only thing i can remeber is, that that marketplace was nemd to "goetheplatz" and still ahs this name......but u should find a lot to that theme....
Actually, before Hitler came in to power, the germans living conditions were not looking so good at all. Hitler himself actually did something useful in his life, by 1938 the german people weren't that bad off compared to like 20 years before hand.
aly j,Sassie,Firefoxy aren't you forgetting a little racist issue Hiltler had with the German Jewish population? Ripped from Wiki answers,it pretty much sums it up. Within weeks of Hitler's coming to power most Jews in Germany were: Dismissed from jobs in the public sector Expelled from college Forbidden to run or act in theatres Banned from writing for or working in the media This was only the start of a hailstorm of anti-Jewish measures. In 1935 German Jews were deprived of German citizenship. In 1938 their passports were stamped with a big red J. They had to add Israel or Sara to their given names. Jewish physicians and attorneys were forbidden to practise, except for treating or representing Jews. During the Night of the Broken Glass or Kristallnacht (9-10 November 1938) Jewish homes and businesses were wrecked by Nazi Stormtroppers. Every synagogue in Germany (including Austria and the Sudetenland) was wrecked. Jewish women were raped ... About 400 Jews were murdered. A further 30,000 were seized and sent to concentration camps, and by Christmas 1938 two thousand of these Jews were dead. The Jews collectively were forced to pay for the damage to their own property! Jews were banned from the centres of most towns and cities. In September 1939 Jews had to hand over their radios, automobiles and even their pets(!) to the Nazis. They had to move to designated streets and appartment blocks. The latter had a large Star of David and a J over every entrance. They were subject to a curfew. That is, they had to be at home from 10pm to 7am. They were banned from restaurants, cafes and bars except for a small number 'approved for Jews' in Jewish areas. They were allowed less food on their ration books than Germans. They were not allowed to enter shops till 3pm - by which time the shelves were often half empty in wartime Germany. In 1941 they had to wear the Star of David when outside the home. Then the deportations to Eastern Europe began ... to the ghettos of Poland and Belarus, the killing fields of Latvia and to Auschwitz and other death camps. o April 1933 - Boycotted Jewish shops; Jews in public sector employment sacked; many Jews expelled from colleges and universities; Jews forbidden to act in theatres. o September 1935 - Nuremberg Laws deprived German Jews of citizenship. o Nov 1938- Night of Broken Glass- Jews killed, fined 1 billion marks. o 1938-39 - Jews banned from a wide range of occupations and also banned from many areas of German cities; September 1939 - Forbidden to own radios (!); moved into 'Jewish appartment blocks'; Jews given fewer rations on their ration books that non-Jews; Jews not allowed to leave their homes between 9 pm and 7 am ... o 1941 - Final Solution - deportation to exterimation camps.
Hey, I was talking about the German people,Hitler created more jobs gave Germans free Hoildays, and i know the jewish people were treated crap. Everyone knows that. Germans were in depression before Hitler came into power, he did good there, but Hitler was also a bad evil man towards jewish people. I will never say that was right, i was only saying that Hitler actually did something worhy, but didn't help the jewish populaion though. How did you know one of my usernames is Aly j
And amazingly enough alot of the jobs that were created were because of the ouster of most if not all Jews from the workforce along with alot of German females and other "undesirables". This has been discussed in another thread recently.
I never of thought it in that way. Did you mean cause of Hitler getting rid of the jewish population, caused more jobs for the Germans? What i just said, it does not mean i argree with what Hitler did.
Of course when a job post becomes vacant, unless the economy is collapsing, it will have to be filled out by others than the group expelled. Same with the housing vacated by Jews, Jew houses were an eagerly sought after item as prizes by the nazi nomenklatura. And be careful with that multiple ID in the forum thing, stick to one.
Here is a portion of a post I put up on Hitler and the Nazis "cooking the books" as per unemployment in the Greater Germany in the pre-war thirties. And it wasn't just Jews who lost their jobs to make room for "true Aryan" men. In the "official numbers", perhaps, so you kind of have to give ‘em that one. Looking a bit deeper, one would be well advised to look in to the "how" the numbers shrunk. Shortly after coming to power Hitler had passed the "Enabling Act" which outlawed all but the Nazi party in Germany, so if you wanted to keep your civil servant job you either became one (a Nazi), or lost your job (no matter ethnicity, or gender). Then in early 1935 the Nuremberg Race Laws were passed which really closed the door for the "untermensch". So a year after taking complete control of the German government, Jews, Gypsies, and other "untermensch" were NOT citizens, couldn’t vote, were dismissed from any professional jobs they had held, and were NOT counted as either "employed or unemployed"; as they didn’t "officially" exist inside the Greater Reich. Also married women doctors and most female civil servants (no matter race or ethnicity) were dismissed the year before (in 1934), and from June 1936 on, no woman could act as a judge or a public prosecutor. The year the Nazis came to power there were 18,315 women students in Germany's universities. By 1939 this number was 5,447. Hitler also removed 800,000 German women, both married and single, from the non-professional work force within his first four years. In August 1933 a law was passed that enabled all married couples to obtain interest free loans to set up homes and start families. To pay for this "state" largess; single men and childless couples were taxed heavily. Here is another "irony", the day after the first nationally celebrated "Labor Day" (while the unions were parading and celebrating), May 1st,1933; "The German Labor Front" (DAF) was officially sanctioned as the only union organization allowed in the Third Reich. All other union office buildings were seized by the SA that afternoon, their assets confiscated, and the union membership "hijacked" into the DAF. These new "union" members became literally the property of their employers, they couldn’t quit, strike, or change addresses without their employers permission. If they tried, it was a criminal offense. Off to jail (or a KZ). And the pay scale was frozen. Sounds like a "great union", right? In reality the "living standard" of the great majority of the German people who were not members of the party hierarchy was lower than that of their pre-WW1 counter-parts in the first few years of Hitler's rule of Germany. The "free vacations" were the window dressing, the workers being the literal property of the factory owners was the hidden truth. And BTW, persons in local jails, state criminal prisons, political KZs, or mental institutions were counted as "employed", this also boosted the numbers a tad don't you think?
Thanks Clint. I couldn't remember where you posted that LOL. And building up the German military also created "jobs".
So i was right, Hitler cause more jobs for german people, but caused alot of deaths while he was doing a good deed,Shame on Hitler. And i know about my multi id's, it was an accident, i thought i could merge them but i could not. I did the right thing and told the adminators of my mistakes, right away.
No you were NOT correct. He and the Nazis "cooked the books" so it seemed that employment grew, when in reality the numbers were false. The standard of living declined to pre-WW1 levels for most Germans, and they were literally the property of the factory owners. These are bad things, and not connected with any "deaths" or immigrations. Nor does it take into account that thousands were thrown out of their professions and put into forced labor "works projects", i.e. lawyers, doctors, and scientists manning shovels and wheelbarrows to feed their families. Another "glory" of the Nazi party rule as per food in the Reich which is rarely if ever noticed is this; Non-Aryan (untermensch) ration book holders couldn't shop until after 3:00 pm, monday through friday, by which time the shelves were mostly bare. Great place to live, even if you had a menial job and were not of the "preferred" class you were going to survive at a lower standard of living because of "when you could legally shop". This also gave rise to a lucrative Black Market, which being illegal also put the sellers and buyers at risk of being shipped of the nearest KZ as "enemies of the state". All before the war years.
Doesn't the Diary of Ann Frank discuss life in Germany in the mid 1930s before the family moved to Holland?
Hi Guys, Yes, in Germany under Hitler if you were jewish was the worst time, what i meant was for the germans with german grand parents and parents with proof that had no jewish blood, they benifit off Hitler. Didn't Hitler get Germany out of a depression? and caused more jobs. I get what you're a saying- Jewish had no benifits. Yes Ann Frank that young jewish girl that died moments before ww2 ended. Like i said in my other answer, unfortunalty if you had jewish blood it was going to be hell on earth, which she went though. If you were German you got all the benifits
In exchange he gave them this: So he made women into breeding cows, nothing more nothing less. Would you like to be treated like a cow, Firefoxy? Because that would be your likely fate in Germany under the Nazis. Please reread what Clint posted. In short if you were a member of the Nazi Party everything went well - and even then it was a wolves fight inside to keep yourself in the good eyes of the "Bonzen", the hierarchy - if not then you were rabble with no rights at all, jew or no jew, gipsy or no gipsy, catholic or no catholic.
No ,I would not like to be treated like a breeding cow. Could you of meant to say is Breeding machines instead of Breeding cow.Cow seems abit harsh. I was actually stating what i know, didn't realized i was way of. I am Sorry I was only stating what i found out. I standing down. Sorry
I'm sorry if I sounded brutal, but that was entirely meant. Nazi Germany was brutal. I wanted to bring home to you the truth of the matter in a way that I was sure would be clear to you. Women in the nazi State were put out of society as much as Jews and other Unternmensch. Women, as set out by Clint Brndirt1 above, were removed from the economy and told to stay at home taking care of the house and the children. The only jobs allowed to women were domestic, secretarial and health related, practically nothing else. So you see, Nazi Germany and much less Nazi occupied Europe were not very happy places.
