The remains of 2nd Lt. Howard C. Enoch Jr., an Army Air Forces pilot who had been missing since World War II, were positively identified by the POW/Missing Personnel Office and will be returned to his family, the Defense Department announced Wednesday. Enoch, of Marion, Ky., will be buried Sept. 22 at Arlington National Cemetery, Va. Army representatives met with Enoch’s next of kin to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army. According to the Defense Department release, on March 19, 1945, Enoch was the pilot of a P-51D Mustang that crashed while engaging enemy aircraft about 20 miles east of Leipzig, near the village of Doberschütz, Germany. His remains were not recovered at the time, and Soviet occupation of eastern Germany precluded his recovery immediately after the war. In 2004, a team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command surveyed a possible P-51 crash site near Doberschütz and found aircraft wreckage. In 2006, another JPAC team excavated the site and recovered human remains and aircraft wreckage. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of Enoch’s remains, the release said.
One of the articles states that he was in the 368th Fighter Squadron. It was part of the 359th Fighter Group. Part of the Mighty 8th.
thanks JC ! Enoch was shot down in action with Me 262's near Halle between 1410 and 1415 hrs according to the 359th f.g. diary of which I own a copy. Enoch had been flying wingman to one of the stars of the 359thfg, Major Niven Cranfill damaging 1 and destroying another 262 on this very date. E `
JC, the 28 jets of III./JG 7 engaged B-17's with R4M's and cannon and then were assaulted by Mustangs of the 357th and 359th fg's. 2 jets confirmed by German records as being shot down and 1 P-51 was shot down by ace Leutnant Rudi Rademacher, most likely this was Enochs A/C.
On 22 September 2008, all flags have been ordered at half staff in Kentucky by Governer Steve Beshear in honor of 2nd Lt. Enoch. In today's paper (The Paducah Sun), the following picture of Enoch was published. Enoch was a 'local boy' being from Marion, Kentucky.
Wonderful reading! I'm always glad to hear when MIA remains are returned to their loved ones! Cheers.
