Does anyone know how many German Divisions were garrisoned or located in France during the time of the German Invasion of Russia in 1941? Also how many divisions were still on the Western Front after the postponement of Operation Sea Lion that would not be able to participate in Operation Barbarossa? Also if anyone knows of any good sources where I might be able to find this information it would be greatly appreciated.
Well, some data: A large part of the German Army of 260 divisions is engaged in the Russian offensive, although some 60 divisions remain on guard in Western Europe and Norway against the possibility of a British attack in the West. http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/timeline/410711amie.html
My files say that in June 1941 the following Infantry Divisions were in the West (Could mean Norway, Nederlands, Belgium,France & Germany??) 708,709,711,712,715,716,719,319,325,81,82,83,88,205,208,211,212,215,216,223,225,227,246,339,342,302,304,306,320,321,327,332,333,335,337,305,323,336,340
I dont know.......... I have a photocopy of some pages from a book, about 25 years old, the book went into the potential Second Front in mid 43. I'd love to get a copy now, but dont know its name.
"I have a photocopy of some pages from a book, about 25 years old, the book went into the potential Second Front in mid 43. I'd love to get a copy now, but dont know its name." The book may have been Grieg's Lost Victory - 1943. Which brings me a related question. What was the strength & disposition of the German ground forces in Western Europe in 1943?
