The M36 served for a very long time also postwar. Once again based on the Sherman chasis.

"After World War II, the M36 was used in the Korean War. It could destroy any Soviet-made AFV deployed in that theatre. One postwar modification was the addition of a ball-mounted machinegun on the co-driver's side as in many other armored fighting vehicles of the time.
The M36 was used by the French army, during the French-Indochinise war.
M36s were also exported after World War II to various countries. One of the recipients was Yugoslavia where the engine was replaced with the 500 hp Soviet-made diesel engine used in T-55 main battle tanks. Yugoslavian M36s participated in the independence struggle of Croatia (1991–1995) but they are no longer in service with the Croatian Armed Forces due to their withdrawal immediately after the war. M36s were also used by Serbian forces in Bosnia and Croatia, and they were used during the Kosovo war as decoys for NATO air strikes. They were also supplied as part of U.S. military aid to Pakistan in the 1950s and served in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965."

This picture shows a pair of Yugoslav M7 Priest on a parade. Note they have early style bogies and the "single ring" machine-gun pulpit, both features of early M7's. The Priest on the right retains the three-piece final drive housing, while the one on the left has been retrofitted with a single piece "round nose" final drive housing.
Although a number of them were still listed as on strength with the various factions, no Priests were reported in action during the 1991-1999 civil war. The last M7s were retired in the early 1980s when the 2S1 SP Gun became available, so they were probably scrapped during the late 1980s.

Quite a few Bren gun carriers got transformed into hedge trimmers here in New Zealand, especially in Taranaki, with the many Boxthorn hedges ! Or used as farm verhicles...

cheers

Seems natural. They are after all, such nimble tracked vehicles should make excellent plowing tractors come to think of it...
They should be able to handle much tougher terrain and their fuel cost should be approximate the same... Very nice post-war use.
Does someone know if the army used them in ground clearance for instance after natural disasters??

Cheers...

The Israelis had the right idea back then, they needed an armored hull with good automotive design, that were cheap, proven, and they could get alot of in a hurry. It filled the need they had for armored vehicles that troops could ride around in while under fire, although i doubt the armor would stand up to even an rpg 2.

Are you referring to the Bren Carrier or the M3/M5/M9 Halftrack?

The Israelis had about 100 Bren carriers back in 1948. After that the M3/M5/M9 series of halftracks were widely used. 450 alone in the '56 war. They were some of the first armored vehicles used in the '48 war. 20 of them. The Israelis had about 200 by 1949.

I remember seeing a picture of a knocked out T34 in Angola. It was in the Jane's book on the South African Defence Force in the U of L library. (Copyright on the book was about 1970.)
