I do not have a very large reputation power (1 point), and can not take away points from someone, but I have always been able to disagree ith the post and give 0 points. I was trying to let a member know that I disagreed with thier post, only I no longer have the disagree option in the rep window. When did this change and why? I think it is equally important that if you can gain rep from other members when you make a good point, then you should have them taken away if we make fools of ourselfs.

I read somewhere that for every 100 reputation points that a member receives, he or she receives 1 extra point of reputation power. Shouldn't that also give Mike more rep power than one point?

The ability to give negative reputation was recently turned off. I agree that on the whole it's a good way to show support or non-support of a post, and that's the way most people used the system. Unfortunately a couple members used the negative rep system to repeatedly browbeat others, so it had to be shut off. Sorry, but it just wasn't worth the conflict that was caused.

Upon joining the forums, rep power is zero, but after 5 posts, rep power = 1. After that additions to Reputation Power is based on three factors:

Post Count: +1 point of rep power for every 1,000 posts you make.

Time Served: +1 point of rep power for every 365 day span you are a member, starting on the day you register

Reputation Earned: +1 point of rep power for every 500 (not 100) points of rep you have earned.

So with 250+ rep points, mikebatzel still has the one point for now, but his one year anniversary is next month, and he should cross 1,000 posts in the next few month or so, giving him 2 extra points fairly soon.

    Hope that helps you both.

Thank you Otto for your timely response. It is a shame when a few bad rogues can ruin an otherwise good thing, but I now understand why it had to be done.

Such is the problem with Reputation Systems. A good decision by Otto to remove the Negative Reputation function.

I agree that it was good to remove the negative reputation function. Good reputation has to be earned but negative rep can be given out of spite.

Thanks, Otto, for the explanation. Looks like I need to get posting!

I thought it was just me! I have had only 3 of those red things and they all came form a single member. After the third I thought I would return the compliment and give him one back-childish I know.

Yeah if you get reputation that is ;) I find its hard to get it, not much I can say.. i've read the site and all my knowledge has been posted within the last years..

I come hear to learn quite frankly, not to teach. But I do teach what I've learned on this website to my friends, family and inaccurate school teachers who need "re-education" gulag style :)

Still my favorite after-school snack, World War Two Forums!!! Now to go read Kai's infamous random facts of world war two.

glad you take it this way guys, when Otto decided to do so we were expected a certain amount of whining and childish behaviour but I must admit we have been dealing with adult reactions up to now.

Why not replace negative rep points with public flogging?

Only gave them to people trying to sell junk cheaper than getting an add in the paper.
I do see room for abuse, (no must spread some around). It seemed like a good idea at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 ;)
Brow-Beating, an excellent catch there. As well it avoids the "Click-ish" ...

Yet if one is hung-up on rep + or -, deeper issues preside.
    It's the Internet :D

This place for the most part, is a cut above, and often enough finds the edge, (reality is sharp, and many times distasteful to at least some)(sometimes many), without being a blog!

Think I'll randomly give some (+ rep) out until it wont let me anymore! ... again

Ok, SW, but if one finds a "rough diamond" like the examples I mentioned above how does one manifest displeasure? I think a couple of neg points are better as they are given in private - in principle only the provider and recipient know about them (plus mods). What is the alternative? Swallow garbage and do nothing about it?

    Whined enough ;)

Ah Ha, now it seems I'm talking "Gun-Control" , and you're the "Pro-Gun" advocate ?

I guess put a limit of 1 on it, one time. Add to your post ...

or we will be a blog (bar-room brawl). Perhaps a little "Grim Reaper" predicting the future of such.

Socialism's nightmare, everyone's a cop. To enable dissension/disagreement, you also enable the abusive & manipulative.

That's what the "Police" (OKF) are for, and make sure you have an IA (internal Affairs) department to weed out "Dirty Cops".

The OKF does a fine enough job, and you better not let me hear a Rogue say otherwise. As an moderator/admin can attest to, a lot goes on behind the scenes and we're also not getting paid to do this 'job'. But I digress, the Reputation system has been abused so Negative Rep has been removed and will not come back.

If a post is truly offensive, then use the REPORT POST function.

I suspect that might encourage a few of the Rogues to give negative rep points . . . .:D

negative reputation giving has been disabled. Positve rep can be given. If there is a troll among us , the PanzerPenguin will take care of him. This way noone will be singled out and buried under negative rep by a group

If this happens it says something about the person being buried doesn't it LOL. I have seen some here make totally outrageous, untruthful, incorrect and baseless statements and yet when pointed out or corrected, politely or not by others, continue to make the same statements as fact. The neg point was one way to point out to that poster how someone else feels with out saying it in public. And as Za pointed out only the two posters and the Mods would know. Well except for the little flame that some of the newbies get LOL. Just my 5 cents worth due to inflation LOL.
