anyway saw the Asch-Bodenplatte episode with the JG 11 attacking the base of the 366th and 352nd fg. several weeks ago at a friends. One of the best high graphic stories I have yet seen. have the dvd on order

I've seen the commercials and they did not interest me. But, if you say it was good, then I may have to check it out.

I didn't get to see that episode but I've seen a few of them. I particularly liked the ones on the IAF

The series is a very CGI intensive program which generally uses interviews form the actual veterans from both sides (when possible) to narrate the action. The computer generated planes are excellent...they still need to work on their explosions btw.

    I would give the series 4.5 stars!:cool::D

Tex you rate them fairly high I see. some of the episodes were just plain.......... lame again the Asch-Bodeplatte episode was one of thebest events I've seen for quite awhile on TV, the graphics were outstanding along with the US interviews. some of the high powered mg and cannon firings with tracers seemed somewhat crude

The interweaving of interviews and the computer images are amazing. I really like the series and hope it continues.

I've only caught the tail end of most of them, which bothers me! I'll have to DVR them sometime. It's a good show, and I do hope to catch the whole episode(s)!

Hi E, i've seen several episodes and loved them. Also, I don't know if you get the Military Channel but, they have several great programs on-that might be of interest to you? These are: Medal of Honor and I forget the name of the series but has something to do with Carrier and air warfare. Oh and they also have been playing episodes of Battlefields. The one with the carrier and air warfare-are much like the Dogfights Doc shown on THC.

I just recently found out that my cable provider has the History Channel and I've seen some episodes of the dogfight series, which is shown regularly in our area on Tuesdays.
I'd rate the series as fair. Some episodes are ho-hum, others though are great. However, I have to acknowledge that some of the things I like may not necessarily be the things that others like or are looking for in the show. That's why I rate the series as fair.
One thing I'm sure most everybody will agree on is that the show's concept of weaving personal interviews with the CG animations is one of the show's strong points.

Saw one about a B-17 vs a Bf110. Two of the bomber crew were alive, (the Pilot and waits gunner). Saying that that Bf110 kep comming after then and how the bomber attemped to preform a barrel roll. The wings broke off and all of the other crew died.:( It's a great show but mostly fixed on the Vietnamese war!

Well ,Creeper, you just have to keep watching...so be patient. Here are the episodes I found for Dogfights at

Dogfights Episode Guide - Dogfights Season Episodes - TV.com

Almost half of the episodes (13/30) are directly about WWII air combat with probably 3 or 4 more with WWII air combat scenarios as examples.

The WWII air combat to me is more exciting than the jet stuff just because WWII was probably the last era for seeing your opponent as another human being. A lot of the fighter pilots mention that they could see the face of their enemy in close in air to air combat! Several of the pilots interviewed from WWII have the MoH around their neck too!

"Fire and Forget" missiles at ranges beyond visual detection is not exactly "knightly" combat...(although you can certainly kill or be killed this way)

(Yes, Erich, I agree the CGI could be a lot better; but the action mixed in with comments and narrative from the actual pilots are true gems.:D)

I think the History Channel version is better than the "live action" version on The Military Channel. I think the later missed a great opportunity to show the aircraft in more detail doing things like making turns or climbing where they might really demonstrate with the real thing just what the differences they were discussing are.
They would certainly have gotten my attention showing a P-38 out zoom climbing a Zero or a Zero out turning a Wildcat or how each aircraft rolls and the importance of that capability. Yakking about it on the ground and then some generic aerial shots was largely a rehash of the History Channel where the CGI was much better.

So how true are the events they portray in the series? I have read that some of them might have been exaggerated?

I really like the show though! Everything is explained well, and i like how they show the graphs of the maneuvers, i always try to use those tactics in games after watching the show! :p

But just seeing those old warbirds in the air was pretty neat. Then I was disappointed they didn't put them "through their paces", until I figured what would be lost if one of them "pooped out", fell apart, or in some other way crashed. What a loss, both historically and monetarialy. Ah well, I don't really like the CGI stuff that much but the show isn't too bad compared to the other trash the History Channel airs these days.

My beef with these series is that the persons from the action are in the backdrop. The narrator is trying to make everything sound sensational. If I was one of the protagonists I think I would have been embarresed about it all.

I'd preferr that the persons involved could do the talking and keep those computer illustrations. I would have enjoyed that.

But then again I have resentment towards the channels from other shows, so I immediatly go looking for flaws rather than enjoying the show....

I hear you Jaeger. I do the same thing. Though being that there are interviews with those who flew the missions I try to take it less salt than usual.

Carl, I really like that Medal of Honor show as well. Some great stories

    Hi Mike, Gents,

Mike, i've only seen a few of the MoH episodes and can't remember which night they were played on? I found the show by accident when I was up fairly late one night and waiting for COMBAT to start on the American Life Network. Anyway, they had two hours of that show on that night-all of which were to do with the WWII MoHers. I remember one of them was about Walter Ehlers-who is one of my favorite WWII MoH Gents. ;-))

I'd love to see a show about Audie Murphy, "Manila John" Basilone, Pappy Boyington and Fransis Curry. That would be a nice equal mix of two from the ETO and the other two from the war in the Pacific. Manila John won his MoH on Guadalcanal. The Sergeant was one awsome Marine-to say the least.
