A friend and fellow WW II fanatic told me he just saw a TV show on cable about Nazis and the occult.

He thought it was about "kril," but I think, after googling, he meant "vril.

A quick google yielded odd fruit.

Very strange info as to Hitler's early experiences with the occult, and how some of his cronies dabbled in it.

I believe Hitler, and I am by no means an expert, briefly dabbled in astrology to predict his successes. As the War turned against him, he began to become estranged with the practice and began jail those who had previously advised him...

Hitler also used Nordic mythology as sort of an allegory for the goals of Nazism.

I think it was Himmler who was the occult fanatic, and even Hitler laughed at his businez occasionally....

What I've heard was that Hitler was amused at Himmler attempts to connect the Aryans to several medieval orders... He didn't bought any of those crap stories (kudos to him).

    Cheers...

Unfortunately this is way beyond nut job material....
Himmler formed the Ahnenerbe prewar, a department of the SS, specifically to find material culture which could be archaeologically linked to the Aryan race. This rapidly blossomed and archaeological depts became the new big thing. Any artefacts found were used to lay claim to territory as being part of the Aryan homeland. These teams travelled globally, even to the Himalayas; that's why Nazis are seen in Raiders of the Lost Ark, even though Spielberg makes no attempt to explain why.
As far as the Teutonic Knights caper, Himmler set up Wewelberg castle as the 'home' of the SS, and there was a special vault in the cellars which was made to look like King Arthur's Round Table.
He clearly forgot that the original Teutonic Knights went out of existence after being almost annihilated by the Slavs at the Battle of Tannenberg in 1415. ;)

I believe there was that episode on the History Channel when they reconstructed the conversations Hitler had that was recorded on film without sound. In one clip it had Hitler mocking Himmler to some extent by saying something to the effect, "What culture is there in a single vase?" referring to the digs Himmler was undertaking.

My own opinion is that after the collapse following the First World War, people sought solace in things that might give hope in the future and one would pursue those things if conventional religion doesn't offer this.

Yes correct, Hitler was "amused" about Himmlers obsession in regards to occult believes.

Yes Hitler was a really sound guy, with plenty of good ideas on how things should be run and generally improving the World.....Oh, and I just saw one of those hallal flying pigs land on the apartment roof outside my window.

Hi Historian, did Himmler's outfit go looking for Noah's Ark and also I wonder did they come across the theory that the Jews were descended from Khazars, don't know if they would figure those folks as Aryans but if they did, it would be a bit embarasing to the Nazi anti-Jew project.

I have actually seen it proposed in a Jewish publication that the reason that America was not invaded by the Third Reich was the great piety of the American Jewish community disuaded God from allowing them to suffer at the hands of Hitler, so presumably the likes of Polish Rabbies who had devoted their lives to studying the Talmud ie the Jewish Law were the sort of bad guys God thought should be carted off to the concentration camps but some American shyster Jew who spent his time shagging his blond Aryan shikse [ non-jewish ] christian girlfriend, running illegal gambling activities and eating treif [ non-Kosher ] hamburgers was worthy of God's protection, perhaps Himmler was not wrong altogether, just a bit off track, rather than looking for the Ark of the Covenant he should have been looking for the Golden Arches as to the means of accessing great supernatural power.

of the "work" that Himmler's Ahnenerbe did:

    Ahnenerbe-SS

Some of it is pretty bizarre of course, but in the climate of the times perhaps not completely "without justification". Interesting reading none the less, I don't know who sponsered that site, nor do I care much as it itself makes a mockery of the Ahnenerbe and its goals.

I watched the NatGeo Channel last night and they had "Hitler and the Occult" on. It was very creepy to say the least. I knew about some occult connections, but this program went back to the origins of the Spiritualism movement at the end of the 19th century and traced its influence of Hitler and Himmler as well.

For those interested: A reshowing will be on 1 March 09 at 9 EST on the National Geo Channel.

Hitler believed somewhat in astrology but was no fanatic about it by any means. i have seen old film of Hitler discussing Himmler's dabbling in the occult and Aryan archaeology, etc. Hitler was commenting on some find or other of Himmler's archaeologists, and he marvelled "What sort of culture is there in a clay pot???"

The Battle of Tannenberg (or as we, Poles say, the Battle of Grunwald) took place on 15 July 1410...

I think people take occult a bit the wrong way , mysticism would be far more realistic term . Hitler was interested in that and he had very good relations with Karl Maria Wiligut who was also known as Weisthor .Doubt if he believed hocus pocus but he definately was into the surpreme race thing and the Aryan origin . Do not underestimate the importance of the geheimleer from Wiligut, it has definately heavily influenced the buildup of the SS and the Ahnenerbe . The Édda and the Oera Linda books were holy to the nazi top in its haydays ..Wewelsburg as the home of the ring bearer cult has also an extreme mystical background , not just symbolical ! Also remember that it wasn't catholism wich was the preferred religion ,but germanism .Julleuchters for Winterwende ..not Xmas !
If you like to see a good introduction to this , try looking for this german documentary on the net :
Rüdiger Sünner - Schwarze Sonne - Mythologischer Hintergrund des Dritten Reiches

There's The.Occult.History.of.the.Third.Reich also , but havent seen that one yet ,so cant say that much about it ..but Scharzer sonne is a serious doc ,very well made and told ..Both you can find doing a little google 'research ' ...enjoy;)
