Looks like there is a general fear that the 2nd amendment will be abridged somewhat by the new administration.

Gun sales surge after Obama's election - CNN.com

I find it perplexing and a bit disturbing that CNN.com includes this article in its crime section. The last time I checked, gun ownership in the USA was not in and of itself a crime . . . .

am very good friends with one of the leading Gun shop owners in Orygun and over 3 weeks ago we were talking already of his business and his own personal business was quite brisk in dueance of the possible Demo Presidency as well as complete Demo take-over of congress. ...this is the prime reason of distrust by many of the new and future kingdom in America and until Bama does come officially due into his next job at January's end then upscale the sales will go beyond the roof with applications to city and state govt, for the issuance of more hand guns

It depends on your view of weapons.

I just love news reports of, say, an embezzler who gets arrested and has his home searched. The news reporters then breathless announce that he <gasp> had a "gun" in his home. The reporter needs to come to my house, they'll have to get out the defibrillator for them when the see the numbers of weapons that I have.

The mayor of the local large city near me (a Democrat, amazingly enough) surprised a lot of people last year when he recommended that all homeowners in the city should purchase a handgun. I was floored, to say the least.

President-elect Obama said during the campaign that he respects the Second Amendment and civilian gun ownership. But most people believe he was lying simply to get elected, and his track record in the Senate and in Illinois supports that perception.

I remember the same thing happened when Bill Clinton was elected (he too, claimed to support the Second Amendment, but it turned out he was lying). People started buying guns in record numbers. Before the Clinton Gun Ban went into effect, I personally purchased eight recievers at fairly low prices, on which I could legally build what the media falsely labeled as "assault rifles". I later sold six of them for an outrageous profit, and had a gunsmith build two nice M1A's for myself. In effect I acquired the weapons for free, thanks to Clinton. probably the same sort of thing will happen again.

What Clinton Gun Ban? He signed the Brady bill, is that what you are referring to DA?

Mark Tushnet, a Harvard Law School professor who has written a book about the gun debate, said new firearms regulations will be a low priority for an Obama administration and Democratic Congress facing a global economic crisis and two wars.

"Maybe the gun-show loophole will be closed, but not much else," he said in an e-mail. "I'd be surprised, for example, if Congress enacted a new assault gun ban."

Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said his organization will continue to press for what he calls "sensible" restrictions — background checks at gun shows, a ban on military-style assault weapons and cracking down on illegal gun trade. He believes he has the backing of the new administration on those issues, but any fears of a broader crackdown are unfounded. (emphasis mine)

    From:

All fired up: Gun owners rush to buy guns for fear Obama, Democrats will curb gun rights -- Newsday.com

(me again) What appears to be ignored by rabid gun-rights persons, and who think/fear President-elect Obama will curb their right to bear or purchase firearms is this; he doesn’t aim for or espouse any such thing, simply applying and enforcing existing gun purchasing laws more fully, and closing the loop-holes on "gun show" sales. He has lobbied for tighter control of assault style rifles, but only on the local or state level in Illinois where gun violence is rampant. But as the other men mentioned in the above article stated, that is probably not a very likely outcome or even possibility at the Federal level.

Here's where you and I part company. President-elect Obama's record in Illinois shows that he will vote in favor of ANY anti-Second Amendment bill that comes along. Obama definitely does espouse the elimination of the Second Amendment and ANY civilian ownership of firearms, if his past statements are any guide.

Maybe, the economy and international affairs will keep him so busy that he won't have time to lobby for the abolishment of the Second Amendment. I certainly hope so, but I'm not counting on it. There is no need for further restrictions on gun ownership in this country, if the current laws are enforced, but that won't stop Obama from trying. I'm willing to bet that within the first year of Obama's administration, there will be more restrictions on gun ownership introduced into Congress and that Obama announces his support of the proposed legislation.

Your choice of authors to quote is interesting. Mark Tushnet is a law clerk for Thurgood Marshall, and has said that if he were a judge deciding constituional cases, he would decide them as much as possible in the interests of "socialism", that is to advance the cause of "socialism". He has advocated limiting judicial review, and believes that the Constitution alone is protection enough for civil liberties. In practice that means that the government (Execuitive and Legislative branches) would decide what the Constitution means. Tushnet seems to assume that there are "loopholes", (i.e. civil rights) in laws governing gun shows. That alone disqualifies him as an objective judge on the issue. For those reasons, I am extremely uncomfortable accepting Tushnet's analysis of the present situation.

I went to a gunshow this past weekend and it was packed with people. Business seemed brisk on ammo and AR 15 knockoffs and accessories. The NRA table was signig up a lot of people as well. I don't think there is any gun ban that could cross his desk that Obama wouldn't sign into law. He would probably close the CMP up as well, or at least cease thier gun sales.

In 1994, the Congress passed legislation that had come to be known by Second Amendment advocates as the "Clinton Gun Ban". Among other provisions, the bill restricted ownership of various kinds of semi-automatic weapons. banned certain weapons whose only identifiable common attribute was that they "looked menacing", restricted the manufacture of handguns to those which had magazines holding no more than ten rounds, and required all detachable magazines for all firearms to have serial numbers.

The law was touted as a "crime fighting measure, but, in fact, it had no provisions which would in any way affect criminal use of firearms, with the exception that it established several new crimes such as possessing a semi-auto fire arm with a bayonet lug attached to the barrel. Skeptics openly wondered how many criminals sought weapons with bayonet lugs. Fortunately, the bill contained a sunset clause which expired ten years from the effective date. During the period the bill was in effect, no reputable researcher ever claimed the bill had the slightest effect on the crime rate; it was, pure and simple, merley designed to harass the law-abiding gun owner.

Looks like Mexico and their 1,500 mile "free" access/no inspection border will be moving more than drugs real soon.
The "Zip Gun" (home-made) business will be in full swing as well. Unless they ban pipe, chop-saws, rat-tail files & welders too. :D

    Slipdigit,

if you're going to censor my language, I'd appreciate it if you would so note in the body of my text that you have altered my language and the reason why. I used that invective to show my total disgust with the post I was quoting and your intervention makes it appear that my feelings against it are less than strongly held.

I understand why you added what you did and agree with it's sentiment.

However, the owner of the forum does not want words that will be read by filters in the forum, so that the forum will not be blocked from schools. I have made this plain many times in the past and it is in the Terms of Agreement, and I am fairly sure that I have addressed this with you sometime in the past.

If you feel the need to make evident your pronounced disdain, disguise the words by use of symbols or letters (e.g. Bu11Sh!t). Filter are not very smart. You get your point across, don't get us block and prevent me playing the language nanny. I personally don't care what words you use in your daily life, but in the context of this forum, I do, because the boss does.

Thank you for your explanation. It is your forum, and of course, you can enforce any rules you like. If I feel it is becoming too heavy handed then I will have to make a decision to accept it or move to another forum where the rules are more to my liking.

All I am asking is, that if you feel the need to censor my language or ideas, please replace the censored portion of the text with a note that my words have been deleted or changed, and the reason, so that readers will know that that portion of the text is NOT attributable to me. The notation at the bottom of the post that the message has been edited does not serve this purpose adequately.

I can do that. As a general rule, I do not edit out anything someone adds, except in situations similar to this. Usually when I edit another's post, it is to add something and it is denoted as such in the body of the text.

I return, I ask that you leave out language that doesn't the criteria outlined in the Terms of Agreement. Do that, and you most likely will never see me trolling around inside your posts.

I can do that, but I won't always be able to judge what is acceptable language and what crosses the line (judging from some other posts I've seen here, it's elastic). I just want to be able to clearly see what I've written and what some third party has chosen to add, delete, or change, and have my readers be ale to do so as well.

It may certainly look elastic but it is not by intent. We try to read and screen every post in the forum, but that is not always the case. Sometimes, I just can't bear to read some the outlandish What Ifs that crop up (salutes to Terry, however) and other times, I simply do not have the time.

As far as a what standard we employ, we follow US mores. If it is generally offensive or considered inappropriate for polite company in the US, it should be avoided. Since we use US standards, you could see words that would raise eyebrows in the UK (such as "fanny") and nary a word would be spoken against it. To us here in the US, it is a tame term for someone's buttocks, while to the Britons, it is something entirely different.
