Hey guys and gals! To be completely honest with you I just found this site at school looking for a picture for my school webpage. I consider myself to be a big military history buff. The books I read nowadays are ones that tell the stories of the soldiers themselves. I'm reading "The forgotten Soldier" right now by Guy Sajer. Absolutely phenomenal story telling by Mr. Sajer. I literally got shivers down my spine during some parts of that book. A good read for any buff. I think my fascination with the Second World War started with the stories I would hear from my grandfather who, like many other veterans, didn't talk about it alot but felt comfortable enough to talk to me about his stories. I became fascinated at first with just how different the world sounded and was back then. I could go into detail but I'm in class and shouldn't even be in these forums. I'm obsessed with the Band of Brothers series and the upcoming series, "The Pacific". I've read nearly all books by the men of Easy Company and am a big fan of Sir Ian Kershaw and Stephen Ambrose. I read the second part of Kershaw's book about Hitler. Absolutely fascinating read. I hope one day to take a battlefield trip in the northern parts of Europe. It's my dream. Thanks for the warm welcome, and I hope to meet my fellow military historians in the very near future. Chris B
Hello Chris. good to have you here. You are lucky to live in such a great place. Do you happen to be close from Port Alberni? a few fine RCAF airmen came from that place and one is buried near my home town.
Welcome Chris! Always great to have a fellow B.C.'er on the forum. You have found a great forum with excellent members, glad to have you. Cheers, Django
Welcome, to the Forum Chris. Always glad to see young people who are interested in what happened in World War II, or any War our service men and women served. You will find many knowledgeable people here and some good information. I would recommend you read some of the books by Dennis Whitaker to read the perspective of a Canadian infantryman in World War II. Actually, there are quite a few personal accounts by Canadian soldiers - they will give you another perspective in a slightly different area of NW Europe in addition to the men of Easy Company.
Chris -- Welcome! This is a fine place full of fine people. You will learn much here, as we all do! Cheers!
Thank you for your warm welcome guys. Sorry it took me so long to reply, school is keeping me busy leading me into the christmas break. I live in Victoria B.C. Which is the absolute southern tip of Vancouver Island. It's the capital of B.C. and you guys are right, very scenic and great mountains to climb. I look forward to talking with you guys.
