Well, well, well, well, what have we got here?! UK closer to joining euro - Barroso - Yahoo! News UK What happens next, returning the Elgin Marbles? The Rosetta Stone?
We've just had ten years of Gordon Bown effectively saying 'Thanks to the fact that we're not in the Euro, we're much better off...'
Bollox. He said some British politicians, not the British government. The Eurozone is now officially in recession too, so exactly what advantages would we gain?
That is a interesting comment when you take in to account the EU dose not really want us to get the euro. Bloody shame I never kept the article where I saw that. And Now My Sarcastic Remark........ The euro to me is nothing more than colourful toilet paper at best. Long live the pound.
Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't the British government be required to submit such a step to a public referendum?
Unfortunately, they're allergic to referendums over here. Last one I can remember was the 1979 one on Scottish devolution. Could be wrong though.
Wasn't there a more recent referendum on the adoption of the new EU constitution, or was that only in Ireland?
In Ireland yes, but on other countries it depended on specific local law, in my country it went through Paliament. Referendums are rare here, it's difficult to have every member of Joe Public understand the full implications of a yes or no, so we tend to leave things to Parliament, which are a direct proportional representation of the nation (or at least are supposed to ). Europe is too large and every country is allowed its idiossincrasies, we even let the Poms have their funny munny
And lose British identity. The pound repressents Britain now. The royal family, not how it use to be, British population is full of different nationlaities, British football teams full of different nationlaities,British ships crew memebers full of different nationlataties, even British shops are full of different nationaties. Keep the Pound, Keep the Pound!
DA, That was only in the Republic of Ireland. Believe it or not, we have Scots, English and Northern Irish law all operating purely within their respective borders, and then British law on national matters. The '79 referendum was purely in Scotland.
Interesting. So basically bureaucrats and elected politicians run everything over there without much input from the public? Except for occasional elections?
EU Referendum Translation: Up yours you Bastards, I Tony Blair as my final act as Prime Minister have sign up. And Gordon Brown as his first act as the new no agenda Prime Minister dots the I's and crosses the T's. So much for Labours 2005 manifesto promise to us.
