One of the RARE signed photos. The ink signature has faded slightly over the years, but is still totally legible. Dedicated to his good friend 'Twiggy'.

    £4,250 ( Only....)

I think you'd need to sell a couple of Texas oil wells to help me buy some of this stuff....

Well, for a start, this particular dealer is asking absolutely 'top dollar' and then some ! Really, his prices seem about double what one would expect. Then again, he'd say it's worth what someone will pay for it.....

And the asking price reflects the great fame, indeed legend, of Guy Gibson, who became world-famous in May 1943 and was killed in September 1944. So his autograph is very rare indeed.

Some autographs in this crazy age are bought as serious investments in the same way as old master paintings. Some years ago, a small number of letters written by T E Lawrence ( of 'Arabia' ) were sold at auction - to an investment bank. They've been locked in a vault ever since, unavailable to scholars. I think Lawrence's signature is now worth between £5,000 - £10,000. Better than shares in Marconi or Enron..... :(

Well, Guy Gibson is quite unknown to me. I've even seen signed documents of Hitler and Himmler for lower prices. Top dollar indeed... [IMG]

Oh, so he was the one who did that. Sorry, I've read very little about the RAF. Quite an act. [IMG]

You guys will like this one.

On Sunday, I met this gentleman who wa born in Poland. When he was about 10 or 11, he was sent to Dachau Concentration Camp.

This man was moved to several camps throuought the war and witnessed many things.

By chance--I happened to be at a locak bookstore that every so often--has an author do a book-sigining there.

Well--I had an arm-load of books about ww2 and was sitting at a table right next to the table this author was doing his speech and book signing.

The book this man wrote is titled: "WARNING and HOPE, Nazi Murder of European Jewry.

This mans name is: William Samelson.

The following text is verbatim and used with permission by said author.

William Samelson was born in Poland and lived there untill the age of 11, when he was interned in various Nazi labor and concentration camps throughout Poland and Germany for the duration of the Second World War. He is Visiting Professor of Holocost and Genocide Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Samelson has written extensively on the Holocost and lectured widely on a variety of topics. Among his many publications are the memoirs, All Lie in Wait and One Bridge to Life.

I have his email address if there are any questions that one wants to ask(providing it is a proper question) and he has agreed to answer said questions.

I have bought his book--signed and dedicated to me ;) and he has given permission to have it publicised on our site. I will be asking Otto for his OK on it (which I am 100% sure--he would like to do so) and have it publicised here for sale.

I would like to see what you guys think about this.

Thanks to good old Bookfinder, added another one to my collection ; -

'The Battle At St Vith, Belgium - 17/23 December 1944' published by the US Army Armor School in 1966 and signed by General Bruce C. Clarke. Inside, von Manteuffel's points for success of the Ardennes Offensive is highlighted and Clarke has written : 'The German plan was based upon this concept' next to it.

For me, this is a very nice 'Bulge' item and, at $20.00, I didn't feel at all robbed.... [IMG]

    Congrats, Martin! Great buy.

A guy I know has/had two (post war) letters for sale by Manteuffel. Also one by Waffe ss general Gille, I believe.

I recently got a German-language bio about Manteuffel from Germany. Unsigned. I did get several signed, self published veteran memoires in! They count as heroes too, right!?

They certainly do in my 'book', Stevin !

Talking of Manteuffel, there was a biography published a few years ago in the USA but it seems to sell for a lot of money... :(

:D , Thank you Martin. One of these days I'll put my website with these self published vet's memoires on-line. Not that I have that many but they do deserve all the 'exposure' they can get.

Interesting 'news' on that Manteuffel title! I first will try to struggle my way through this German book. Angelray books is going out of business and they have two interesting titles on Generals Model and Heinrici for $12 or so! Unsigned, though... [IMG]

The Manteuffel book is called ' Panzer baron ' by Donald Grey Brownlow. On Bookfinder, the 'cheapest' copy is $60.00, the most expensive $120.00.... :( :( :(

    Auch!! :(

It is cheaper to learn German and read the German book, which I got for under 20 euros...

Thanks for the info, Martin. Who knows I run into a copy one of these days at a carboot sale... :D
