I can't find my source right now, but I seem to recall reading that at one point during the war (41 or 42?) Stalin became so desperate that he asked FDR for American troops to fight in the USSR.

Anybody have any info on this?

He kept requesting that the allies open a second front. I don't recall him requesting American troops to fight on the Eastern front. It bothered him enough that he had to use some American equipment.

I would have liked to have been in the Oval Office when that call came through.

"Okay Joe.....we'll get right on that"

    Calls Winston Churchill
"Winnie, Have you talked to Joe Stalin today?"
"Oh you did; he asked you too? what did you tell him?"
"I know ..dude; I could barely keep a straight face"
"Alright then see ya at Malta"

Sorry, guys, I had it wrong - it was actually a request to Churchill.

Received the below reply from the Axis History Forum (d*mn, those guys are sharp!)

In his letter to Churchill of 13 September 1941 Stalin wrote:

Just a means to shame the Western Allies into opening a second front I think. Stalin threatened even to make a seperate peace for Hitler if no Second Front was opened by 1944! o_0

That passage is without refrence to the time and problems of sending and supplying 25+ divsions. Either Stalin had no concept of the transportation requirement, or he knew and the passage was simply rhetoric.

I stratigic terms it is certainly the long way aaround for getting a British army at the heart of Germany.

British troops were stationed in Northern Iran ready to enter the Caucasus if the situation ever became desperate in Russia.

Which is probably why the Germans stopped at the Caucasus Mountain

Well, I think the Nazi forces were overextended and rundown by the time they neared the Caucasus, and Russian resistance was stiffening.

With Stalingrad and the threat to cut off the entire Army Group in the Caucasus, that ended any chance for the Wehrmacht.
