Yep, my bad on the spelling, I knew it was wrong but I was tired and wanted to go to bed, but still wanted to know the answer So you think he simply put two and two together and assumed that he thought it was the same person.
According to what I just read in imdb about SPR in the trivia section, the German soldier known as "Steamboat Willie" is not the same soldier fighting in Ramelle, who killed Mellish and then was killed by Upham at the end. The description (as a spoiler) points out the difference between the two, with Steamboat Willie being Heer and the other being an SS man, played by Mac Steinmeir, who was billed as "Waffen SS Soldier." I was surprised too, as I thought that both were one and the same just like most everyone else.
They came face to face in the stairwell of the house where the SS man killed Pvt. Mellish with the bayonet. Remember, Upham was supposed to be running ammo to them and stopped in the stairwell. The German walked down passed Upham, they looked at one another, Upham sat down and began to cry I believe, and the German put his helmet on, checked the street, and then headed back into the battle.
Yes......Mellish is calling Upham by name to bring more machine gun ammo. So it would have been a pretty quick process of elimination, when he was leaving the room, that the guy he saw carrying machine gun ammo was Upham.
Michael Bay is vehemently against smoking so he did his utmost to omit scenes showing actors lighting up cigarettes or smoking them. The head honchos at Disney might have objected to smoking scenes as well (Touchstone Pictures and Buena Vista International, which distributed the film are part of the Disney Corporation).
