For the most part-they could be equal to our Marines. They fought hard and well, and if you ever get books like Jason Marks: Island of Fire, you can read a bit about them in that book.
The Naval infantry at Sevastopol were basically Soviet elite infantry formations. Their standard rifle was the SVT40 instead of the bolt action mosin nagant and their units had more concentrated equipment overall. As with most Soviet elite formations (ie. Parachute), the educational standards and literacy levels were higher.
The Germans did loath the Russians, and for the Soviet navel Infantry,it depends what year you are talking about! The soviets Infantry wwre not good all though ww2 though. when first went up agianst germany it was not great at all, russians failed and i do recall Stalin asking for help from the western powers. When the years went by they gain alot stronger and more power! This you could say the russians were fantastic.
Thanks for this article. Since I know very little about the Eastern Front as a whole, and specific units in particular, this was an interesting read.
The naval institute press used to have a book by one on the campaigns in the north with a little on the campaign vs the Japanese. I'm not sure if this is the one I'm thinking about or not: Amazon.com: Blood on the Shores: Viktor Leonov: Books Here's a similar thread on another forumL http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/...viet-naval-infantry-during-world-war-2-a.html
Get this book! Alot about the Russians and the eastern front! A writer at war/Vasily grossman -with the redarmy 1941-1945.
Just bought a e-book about the Soviet naval infantry. It's a very good read so far. The third naval infantry regiment were some very good troops and they went through some hell while giving it in the process. I provided a link to the site which I purchased the book. There are alot of options there. I posted the link in the books forum for those who are interested.
