Hello from a new member in New Zealand. As I move through my 'middle life' I have become increasingly interested in the activities and events surrounding my parents and relatives who participated in WW2. Unfortunately all the survivors have since passed away, and were all reluctant to talk about the war. To be honest I probably did not show a great deal of interest in my younger days. In particular I would like to find out more about events surrounding the only war casualty in my family. My uncle was with 10th squadron RAF and was shot down 22/10/1943. I have visited his grave at Hannover CWGC (still brings a tear to my eye) and I would like to find out more about the mission and hopefully the circumstances that were encountered leading to his death My internet searches so far have not been overly successful but I am possibly not looking in the right places. Could anyone suggest a good starting point? My apologies for the selfish reason for joining the forum, but I hope you will all understand. Thank-you, St.John
Welcome to the forum John. I am sure someone here can help you out with your search. I hope you find what you are looking for. Where abouts in NZ are you located? I am right outside Auckland.
Welcome St John. Which 10 Squadron Halifax was it ? I have three in my records (HX174, JB974 and JD315) of whom two have crews burried in Hannover. If you wish you may start a special thread for this query in our information request section.
Hello and welcome to this fine place! A great group here so I am sure you will enjoy your time with us! Jump right in! Cheers!
welcome. your not being selfish. What better way to become interested in history, than to find out where your love ones fit into it.
Yo there St John from Christchurch, NZ. I'm like you: I'm about the same age and I also have lots of relatives who never said anything about their experiances of WWII. I just found out that my deceased uncle helped to build the Henderson airfield at Guadalcanal. I have an aunty who is a member of the Anglican Pacifist Society partly because of another uncle who suffered extremely badly from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrone after the war. And, yea, I know: war can eat you up inside, but it was one war that just HAD to be fought through hell and high water! Welcome.
