You can join me in the warm admin hut of an out of the way base somewhere in the UK, quiet, not too hot, not too cold and no chance of getting killed.
thanks martin--guess it is the age difference and having been there--I would not trade the experience and comradeship of the time but would much prefer 'no one' should have to be in service in any war--just my .02
Erm... MI5 would be nice lol. Or if that's asking a bit too much the Black Watch would be cool, or a place where there would be plenty of WAAFs around .
Me, I'd like to be in the Panzertruppen, either in tanks or in armored cars (especially the Panther and the Puma, my two favorites, respectively). I just like armored vehicles, and the Germans had the most fascinating variety. Besides, the Panzer boys wore the coolest, spiffiest uniforms! Yours, Paul
as a swedish volunter in finland i guess, fight aloing side my grandfather but then again.. ideology aside. 5th Ss Pz div.. " join the ss they said... see the world they said.."
Actually i read a Vassily Cujkov´s book "From Stalingrad to Berlin",so i rather see this long battle on soviet´s side. And i hope that i survive )
I would have wanted to serve in Europe. If I was in the D Day invasion I would have most likely wanted to serve with a Pathfinder unit or Airborne Unit. 82nd or 101st. I wouldn't have wanted to be in the first waves of the beach landings, particularly Omaha.
1st Marine Division in Guadalcanal with 1st Para-Marines and the 1st Marine Raider battalion. Outnumbered 3 to 1, with no food (thx to the USN sailing off because they saw a few Japanese planes), no heavy artillery(again, thx to the USN sailing off), No tanks, and just enough ammo. They perfected the art of water landings, jungle warfare, and turned tide of the Japanese advance onto Australia. I would have probably loved to fly in the VMF squadrons on Guadalcanal too. At most times they had less than a dozen Wildcats to defend the island and Henderson airfield against entire groups and wings of Japanese fighters. Mostly a thrill ride I think though, but probably quite the experience (If you don't crash and burn...get malaria, starve to death, heat stroke, snipers, get eaten by a lizard.....ouch)
Cultural attaché in the US Embassy in Rio de Janeiro. Excellent climate, Copacabana beach nearby, a rich embassy, all work to be done would be helping Walt Disney with his propaganda films, like Saludos Amigos and the Three Caballeros
Just read my previous posting and it seems a bit bare. so....... Like to have been a signaller in Fortitude North. Why? 'Cos the "HQ" of the fictitious Army Group based in Scotland and training for an invasion of Norway was Stirling Castle and a stately home about a mile away from it.........both in my back yard! Once that was finished, like to have gone back to my nice underground "Y" Service listening Post at Cupar, Fife, for the duration! Regards, Gordon the Cynic
Definetly I'd be a top turret gunner in a Heinkel-111 in Battle of Britain (so I could see if that's true what I see on the movies of BOB - a single shot from any Hurricane or Spitfire and the gunner was dead, both engines on fire and the plane going down..................)
Hmmm - you look a little exposed up there, Gaucho..... http://www.warbirdalley.com/he111.htm ( PS : Welcome to the Forums ! )
This may scare you or disgust you... but I Would love serving in any war theater under the command of Marshall Rommel, I say it because I love the Wermacht, I love Marshall Rommel.... and for no coincidence he took part in (for me)the best theaters of the war... GAG
I would serve the Motherland on the eastern front as a Razvedchik (Rahd-Zeh-Vikh) scout. I would sneek behind faschist lines, and steal important enemy documents, then get out before anyone sees me. I would also serve as a Stalin-II tank commander, or maybe just a Komsomolyets (Junior communist member) with a ppsh-41 out somewhere on the war against the faschists. (I'm not very old) ~Katyusha~
