Info on 383rd Anti-Aircraft Battalion

Good Day-

My grandfather, from Cleveland, OH., was in the Pacific with the U.S. Army during WWII (from '43-'45) and was a member of the 383rd Anti-Aircraft, Anti-Pillbox, Anti-Personnel Battalion. From what I gathered, I think his battalion was part of the 37th Division(?). He informed me that he fought in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines (by way of Texas and California). I've tried using the internet to find out everything I could about his battalion, but there's not a lot of information on his specific battalion.

I'm hoping somebody can provide more information on the 383rd Anti-Aircraft battalion to me; Specifically, I'm looking for the insignia of the 383rd , but any and all info provided will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

 

We have a reunion every year in Ohio. It will be at the Wright-Patterson ariforce base this year from 7/31-8/2. If the attachments didn't come through, e-mail me, and I'll try again.

My grandfather was in the 383rd as well, his name is Edwin Ackerman. If anyone has ANYTHING they can post, I have been looking as well.

My father was in the 383rd. His name was Ed Burkett. I have a unit history that was his. There is a picture of a mosquito holding an aa shell while in flight. I believe that this was their insignia.

 

Hello, I've recently started looking for more information regarding my grandfather's service in the Pacific as well. He is also from Ohio (Columbus) and his last name is Montenaro. I have a picture (which I'll include) of a sign bearing the 383's name somewhere in that theater. Note the aforementioned mosquito logo.

I am just now trying to glean as much info as possible from the pictures I have, and anything pertaining to the 383d I'll post here.

In fact, I would appreciate ANY ONE'S information on the 383rd. as soon as I figure out how to upload, I have a pic of their banner with the listings of the places they went that my Dad wrote on the bottom.

 

Do you have your image on your computer?

If so click on the "Go Advanced" button and it will bring up a new window. Scroll down until you see "manage attachments' button and click on it then follow instructions.

Units of this type are sometimes difficult to research. There isn't much on line, but it does seem that a history was published in 1950. It was titled:

The Hot Loop: A history of the 383rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion

I found it listed in the holdings at the Brown University Library. You may want to have your local library do a search to see if they can track down a copy for you. It may be a long shot, but it is worth a try.

As mentioned, ask your library to check about getting a loaner copy from one of the listed libraries, I've had pretty good luck with my local library doing this.

If you could get a better photo of the bottom of the banner, we might be able to help you figure out the ones you haven't been able to decipher.

 

I have asked for a copy of the book "The Hot Loop" from the library but they say I have to go through my local library to make the request. My wife's uncle is mentioned in the book on pages 54 and 98. Sgt William F Fish. He died on September 25, 1944 and we have been searching for years for information regarding his service. Unfortunately, my wife is now the only surviving member of the family. Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Bill

 

Welcome, Bill. Yes, you will need to take the book title info in Post #15, above, to your local library and ask them to get the book for you. I've had good luck with this in the past, usually takes 1-2 weeks for it to arrive. You can then check it out from your library just like any other book.

I did find William's headstone application which indicates he was in Battery C. You may know this already?
