I was given this case last week by a friend, and I first posted the question on ww2talk the other day. With help from members (and much Googling) I think I've ID it, but I'm not 100% What I have so far is; RohrAufsatz fur leiche GranatWerfer. Which I think translates to; Barrel/Bore sight for light mortar. The mortar being an leGrW 36. on the inside of the lid is a di stamp with WaA 763. I was hoping one of you experts could confirm or enlighten me as to it's use. Thanks in advance.
Well, to me it looks like a carrying case for the optical sight that you mentioned. From the picture you provided, it looks like the inside has some padding left in it. You can't have an expensive and very important part of a crew-served weapon bouncing around in the back of a kubelwagon on the move, eh?
It's a bit small for grenades Maj.W ... It's dimensions are; H-7cm x W-7cm x D-4cm Not a very big bang....
it is part of the sighting mechanism of the 5cm leichte mortar early models have a telescopic sight and later issue are laid out by menas of a white line painted on the barrel and elevation is established by quadrant via an elevating screw sleeve attachment in front and below the barrel. E ~ cool little case Blksnake
... Cool indeed Erich. That's what I figured, when it was first introduced in 1936 the 50mm mortar did incorporate such a sight, but it was found to be over-complicated and difficult to use so was replaced in 1938 by the sighting line you mention. The translation fits, so I think I'll settle for that. Pity it's empty. Lt. Palmer ... No worries, my bad for not including the dimensions originally. It's just not big enough to contain anything of a destructive nature.
