It was just wonderful.. Pa was so shocked that he forgot to put his hat down and then didn't know where to put it. He said he thought he was gonna faint.. Thank God he didn't.. And he joined the VFW.. I really think that all this has helped in someway!!! THANK YOU TO ALL THE VETERANS OUT THERE!!
I am happy for the old boy. Please extend to him, on behalf me and my family, our warmest regards. You done good!
Awesome. Just wish the schools around here did more of the Veteran's recognition on this day. I told my son to be sure and tell the teacher that today is Veteran's Day! Great post; memorable time!
Can't think of a more appropriate way for a real hero to celebrate Veterans Day. Thanks for doing this for him, and thanks to all the Veterans out there that made days like this possible.
Yup the schools do this every year here. They don't always have a vet getting medals of anything but they always have a service. I think it is important for the kids to remember also. Today was really cool for this but also because my sons best friends dad is in Iraq and was home on leave and made for Pa too.. Pa's smile was huge to see him there too.. We all get together for birthdays and stuff and Pa really likes to talk to this guy.. and Pa knew he was in Iraq but did not know he was home... It was just a great day.. all vets were there from WWII to Iraq and all in between.. Red, White and Blue was shinning in our town today!!
Sandy all I can say is that this is outstanding to hear !! as for my home town a great big 0. may be due to the weather. personally I am writing veterans by email and thanking the living vets in my family for their fine service and dedication. just scrolled to the top of this page to see the man with his framework of honour............fantastic
Erich that is wonderful that you are doing that. Many people don't do it, it does mean something to them even of they do not show it. Thank you for remembering them!!! I seen each Veteran smile when they were giving Pa his medals and afterward they all came up to me and thanked me for doing that for him.. to me the thanks was enough that they did it for me during the services and I owed the thanks ya know.. I cried and was shakin while he was up there.. all I can say is it was such a moving feeling.. like when I went with the boys scouts and my boys to the moving wall for the Vietnam vets.. very touchin and honorable.. it's just a feeling of pride.. your talking to a girl that cries during taps and the Star Spangled Banner.. I am patriotic.. Very.. I did tell the other vets that if they need help getting medals and stuff to let me know.. it was one way I could show my thanks for today.. Looking at the picture.. He don't look bad for being 85 next month either...
yes it's great. interesting side line a number of years ago an unknown pilot from my town John Hampshire an ace of the Flying Tigers kia with the Japanese after 10 plus aerial victories over China we had a dedication with my Boy Scout troop and honor guard and flag ceremony in renaming our small airport to the north of us in little berg of Merlin. In attendance was 3 of the former pilots of the dwindling unit. As I was scoutmaster at the time I was watching very closely the statements and questions the guys had for our veterans and was amazed at the knowledgibiltiy they had even my son in asking questions of them after the dedicating ceremony. the Vets grinned from ear to ear signing several books while the guys in their teens, pre-teens were in awe. I was proud and pleased as punch and the outcome of the event ............. May 24, 1998.
Sandy what an awesome day it must have been for everyone! I am so glad that he was able to see how much his service to his country was appreciated.
I'm surprised at this. Our local TV news and newspapers have been filled today with stories of local schools conducting ceremonies similar to what took place for Sandy's Pa. It has become more and more common around here for these kinds of remembrances.
The man from the VFW in the pic with Pa was great with the kids.. and they knew more than I thought they would.. he did the flag folding and went threw what the steps stand for all 13.. and he did the pledge step by step to tell them what it stood for.. and explained taps and had a man play it.. that makes me cry every time!! it was a great ceremony and the kids loved it!! those could be the next Veterans and I hope they got something out of today.. not just from Pa but from all they were taught there too.. I talked to him after and just oraised him for the job he did with the kids.. I wish I would have taped the complete thing but hind site.. I should have..
