It never occured to me to check for second world war forums on the internet, i am glad i found this! Always thought I was the only one my age (17) with a big interest in WWII. As for family history my grandfather was very involved in the war. I don't know the exact details as he never liked to talk about his experiences, but this is as far as i know. He was in the Polish cavalry when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, and had some horrific hand to hand experiences. He was then sent to fight the Russians who were invading Poland from the east, and was captured. He was put on a train bound for Katyn forest (massacre) to be executed, but managed to escape from the train. He escaped through Hungary, and eventually into France where he was brought back to England. He ended up in the RAF 315 squadron and flew for the rest of the war. Over the last few years i have develloped a great interest in military history, particularly world war 2. I find the Normandy campaign to be the most interresting, although the eastern front does fascinate me. Thanks very much for having me, glad to be here.
Welcome aboard, BouncingSoul. You are definitely not alone in your interests. There are plenty of friendly, helpful Rogues about, so post questions and take part in the discussions. Your grandfather's story sounds fascinating. Give us as much information as you can find. I'm willing to bet there are some around who can help you find even more. Good luck.
Welcome, Bouncing Soul. Your Grandfather's tale is quite fascinating and covers a lot of territory! I have a book published during the war about the Polish 303 Squadron. I believe there is a thread in the forum about the Polish squadrons which might interest you.
Great story about your grandfather! Looking forward to whatever else you have to offer as well. Welcome aboard and enjoy yourself.
Welcome on this great forum. I'd love to hear from your grandad. Did he fight in the Battle of France or did he just pass through on his way to England
Thanks very much for the hearty welcome. I believe the time at which my grandpa was moving through France was as it was being invaded, or very shortly afterwards. He and his unit apparently had a tough time with collaborators and German soldiers which would suggest that it was occupied. macrusk thanks a lot for the insight, i will go have a look for that forum. I know a book on 315 squadron was recently published as well, and had some account of my grandfather. I plan on doing some research, and hope to post a detailed account of his story as soon as i can.
