Hi there, I'm Steve; my 'handle' (rogish) is my last name. I'm 36 years old, and have been interested in Military/American History/War for as long as I can remember.

I found ww2f.com while searching for information on a family member that was killed 7 Nov 1944 in France as a member of Company B, 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division.

At this point, the info that I'm gathering is nothing more than 'big picture' data. It seems like anything more specific on subject is going to come from his IDPF or the Army Roster and Morning Reports. What I don't know is how or specifically where he died. Here is what I've got as of today:

    Edward Carl Goldner Jr.
    US Army, Corporal
    Serial Number - 36579778
    Date of Birth - 1 Jan 1924
    Killed - 7 Nov 1944, France
Unit - Company B, 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division
Home of Record - Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan
Buried - White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, MI 14 Aug 1948

    Welcome matey.

Good luck on your search for your family member. It can be great to learn the fate or even just the experiences a family member in ww2 had, it can make you proud to be apart of that family.

    Good luck,

Welcome to this fine forum. Acording to the date of death, it looks like the place of death could have been Lorraine or neigbouring regions. Do you have any idea about the place?

You might want to look through this site. There is a tremendous amount of information available on the 44th Division and its movements. I would recommend reading through the various sections (each has several pages and maps) to get a sense of what happened. Nordwind: 44th Infantry Division

On this page, down toward the bottom, is a list of the Command Posts for the division. It looks as though your grandfather was killed near Meurthe-et-Moselle.

All new information seems to have stopped about a week ago (I've reached the extent of what Google can find). My best guess is that he died near Embermenil, France. See attached map from 13 Nov (he died 7 Nov), where I've highlighted 1st Battalion of the 324th.

Waiting for a couple of books to arrive:

    • Combat History of the 324th Infantry Regiment
    • World War II Order of Battle
    Waiting for documents:

    • IDPF (requested mid-December)
    • Rosters and Morning Reports (requested mid-December)
I've been in contact with a couple of other people who are trying to help, and I'm hopeful to have more information soon.

Thanks for all of your input,
    Steve

I suspect that those documents and books will be of help. Please let us know what you are able to discover when you get them.

    Good luck.
