What if Nazi Germany had NOT attacked Russia? I know, I know, that the nature of the beast was to hate the Reds.

What if instead of attacking Russia, Hitler just posted strong formations on the eastern border of Poland?

Without the Russians destroying a huge bulk of the Nazi armies, I think WWII would have lasted into the 50's.

    Comments?

Welcome to the forum trashcan man. You can find previous posts to this question in the Russia At War forum but I would say that it was inevitible for Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union to go to war with each other. It was a matter of time. In reality, Germany could not afford to give the USSR time to rebuild its Army after Stalin's purge. So, it pretty much had to attack. Also, to get the manpower and support from subservent states it occupied, Hitler had to attack. My thoughts.

AS well I think it was destined to come;the war between Russia and nazi Germany. Just like Hitler said in Mein Kamp, the lebensraum would be taken in the east.

I think it might have been even harder for Germany to fight the Russians later on as Germany was not putting that much effort into making its forces to stand for long warfare periods, and the Russians were making loadsa T34´s etc vehicles for war they knew was coming.

Stalin himself might have been ready for war by 1942 summer.

The Germans could have won not just sevived. Think about it. Hitler had 20 panzer divsions at the start of Barbarossa. He could easly have conqured the mediteranian with all the extra planes and infantry plus could have given Rommel 2 more Panzer Divisions and Rommel could have then easly pushed onto Cairo and into the Middle-East (this is assuming that Hitler would attack and capture Malta and the rest of the Mediteranin Islands that the British control). After this Hitler would easly be able to keep the USSR out and mabye even gain some territory from them for fear that Hitler could start a two front war from the West and South. Plus the Japanenes could have goten German support in India thus crushing one of the largest Pacific problems for the Jap's. The British would shulry make peace sence they would otherwise quickly lose all there remaining colonies and the USA wouldn't even get involved because there wouldn't be enough support and even if the US and Brition did attack they would be attacking a REAL fortress Europe.

Honestly speaking,I think that in this case,Allies would loose.First of all , Germany could immediately send much more "Stukas" (against RN ) and panzer divs in North Africa, while Britain could do nothing to stop them. So , UK wold lose Egypt and Iraq with its oil. Also without Eastern Front, Germany could produce much more planes and U-boats to defeat Britain. Germany had more powerful industry ,more resourses and almost invincible logistics. Certainly, Hitler couldn't successfully land in England in 1940 or 1941, but I'm not so sure about 1943 or 1944, when USA got indeed powerful army. And after loosing England any US participation in Europe would be impossible.
In addition I want to say that we paid 26 millions of lifes to win. I really doubt that USA would want to do the same or to defeat Germany more successfully than we did. Yankee simply doesn't like to die for other nations.
Nevertheless , I think that real life if Hitler didn't invade Russia, Stalin would invade Germany and finally Nazi would be defeated.
    Please excuse my English.

Plus the axis would have an unlimited supply of petrol/oil from the Middle East.

I don't think the war would have lasted into the 50's. Truman would have dropped the A-bomb on Germany like happened on Japan.

I think that in that case Russia would have taken the offensive. Undersupplied and green as they were, I think they could have, with some Allied assistance they would have successfully fought against the Germans. On the other hand, if Russia was not attacked, why would it risk going on the offensive...?

well, I've always thought about that and I've come up with the conclusion of it wouldn't have helped Hitler win the war but it would've helped him hold in there longer.

You figure without the winter of 1941 attacking Hitler's back and the deployment of the Siberia Corps training for an attack (yes, in the other direction but despite the fact) the Wehrmacht would've had alot more men to spare when the Western front came.

In a thread long ago, I was part of a lively debate over whether war with Russia was almost inevitable. I thought and still think it was. And with a Russia built up and ready for war, Germany would have been in trouble. But of course, had England been knocked out, the USA would been in a difficult position, as would Russia.

Assuming no war ever took place between Hitler and Stalin, I think Germany would have taken England and USA and Japan/Germany would hit a stalemate. Of course once someone or everyone gets the bomb, who knows. There might not have been a world well into the 50's.

yea i feel that it would have turned out VERY differently but on the same note i feel that America, and Britian would have turned to the Russians for help sooner or later, such as the Russians urged us to open a second front on the Germans. who knows , thank God they did!
