Thanks for the understanding Stefan. You obviously know more about the ACW than most people here in the states, and definitely more than most students these days. As you can see, I tend to get a little worked up and concerned about things concerning that period of our history. I don't care how it's taught (good, bad or ugly), just as long as it is right. As for how things are taught up North Hilts, you'd have to get some input from our retired resident educator and most esteemed moderator, Professor Lou. Public education is a sad state of affairs in the southern US these days. I read an article in the paper a couple of weeks ago that claimed that this year, there are just over 50% of all students in the South are NOT in public schools. Private and parochial schools have a booming business as a result of the decaying public school system.
Thanks for the kind words, Bobby. I can't speak for all schools, but my guess is that the quality varies depending on location. I would think that many urban districts have great problems. I was fortunate enough to teach in a relatively affluent suburban district, coincidentally the same place I went to high school. I taught in the junior high, and I know our 8th grade curriculum spent about 2-3 weeks on the lead up to the ACW and the war itself. Our high school revamped the American History program to a 2 year program, 11th and 12th grade. 11th grade covered through about the 1880's; 12th grade 20th Century. I would say that in our case, the Civil War was fairly well covered. Whether or not students managed to retain that knowledge beyond school would probably depend on their individual levels of interest. In any case, I'm pretty confident in saying that the approach was one of multiple causation, which would be true for almost any historical event.
I of course didn't teach, but was the recipient of excellent teachers in the area of History as I went through the grades and High School here in Montana. And I am a bit taken aback at what "isn't" covered anymore. While both my sons are long out of the system, they received only cursory coverage of American History, let alone World History when they attended. They were both "technical" and "art" focused, so their requirements for what I though should be "core" subjects were lax to say the least. An hour or two here and there on civil/social studies, little to nothing on history proper, and the teaching of core English grammar and such was simply non-existant. What I found even less impressive was the lack of science and math requirements.
It is looking very "Conservative/fundamentalist" in the Texas book recommendations, here is a description on some of "what’s in and what’s out": See: Backstory: How The Texas Textbook Revision Came To Be - Yahoo! News- and: Glenn W. Smith: Conservatives Re-Write Declaration of Independence I am more than a little upset that they are attempting to drop Jefferson, place Jefferson Davis alongside Lincoln, and rehabilitate the Junior Senator from Michigan, McCarthy.
The Huffington post, please.....I'm glad that Texas is sticking it to the Liberal and Progressive public school system gurus. Fundamentalist not, we'll save that term for their Islamic pals. It is a breath of fresh air in these times of socialist occupation that the schools reflect and focus on important historical events and people. If you check the Venona files you will see that Sen. Joseph McCarthy was right on the money. I guess that's the problem when people believe in George Clooney's Good Night and Good Luck as history. These same people who want to control the minds of youth with unAmerican garbage, the Sean Penns, Michael Moores, Alec Baldwins, Joy Behars, Danny Glovers, Susan Sarandons, Tim Robbins, Janeane Garofalos, Jane Fondas and Barbra Streisands. At least with Bo Derek, Cheryl Ladd, Leeann Tweeden, Janine Turner and Kathy Ireland you get beauty and intelligence. The only communist scare in the 1950's was that the communists would be found out and Venona confirms that. Hiss and the Rosenbergs got what they deserved. Keep up the good work Texas.
no matter where the story/article comes from, Huffington or not, the facts are the facts. Replacing Jefferson with Phylis Schafly (sp?) and Newt? Trying to rehabilitate McCarthy? The fact that he didn't know he was partially correct doesn't make his "witch hunting" less repugnant. Removing persons who influenced the American founding priciples and glorifying country western music? Hopefully cooler more intelliegent heads will prevail, and these ludicrous proposals will be refused in the forthcoming public input and voting sessions. Please is right.
Thanks, I spent a third of my degree studying it and find the whole period fascinating. The modern attitude to the war is almost as interesting as the real historical events.
With all the history of England and the empire, you concentrated a third of your concentration on the ACW? Your professors must have thought that you were crazy!
Just because you don't agree with something doesn't make it unintelligent. These so called ludicrous(your opinion) proposals are all but a done deal and I believe will be finalized in May. This is just the start of change we can believe in. Benjamin Franklin, said, “You have a Republic, if you can keep it.” We plan to.
