Alright.....the Pearl Harbor bash thread is getting clogged with Tom Cruise references, so in lieu of propegating thread piracy hopefully all the Maverick posts can be moved here: I did not like Valkyrie, I don't think it did justice to those depicted and Tom Cruise can not act. The only high point in the movie like all my favorite Tom Cruise movies; is when he dies at the end. IF they would have had him dying at the beginning it would have made a better movie.
Whether Cruise can act or not has been answered at the box office. And his role in several movies has been pretty good: War of the Worlds, Minority Report to name a couple. Valkyrie was ok. Not Oscar matieral, but an order of magnitude better than Pearl Harbor.
Oh God! here we go again. Cruise (like most "actors"), is no better or worse than the majority of the self-important egos stalking the West Coast of America. 'Hipe' and marketing is what drives the box-office. No actor can turn poor writing or directing into a good movie. Writing, story line and production makes for pleasurable viewing. It's kind of like politics- I believe or agree with what they say ergo they must be good. (like the way I inserted politics into a movie thread?) Anyway there are actors I enjoy watching on the screen but think they are outright **$holes. Others that I wouldn't watch if I were paid to.
Great story Those guy where real brave.Hitler was lucky . Only one thing wrong with the movie Tom cruise was in it .
Okey Valkyrie.. I liked the movie, hated tom Cruise in it.... the reason being, Cruise overacts and over dramatises the story. There are some actors that are versitle... like for example Johnie Depp, and Tom Hanks. Basically what I mean is that when they act i don't associate him/her in another film, The character is original and the acting is excellent. tom cruise does not do that. the whole movie I kept associating him with top gun. In my opinion it was not the best choice to pick tom cruise. the only good part is that he holds a striking resemlence to Stauffenburg. They should have picked a lesser known actor to play the role. Then again I could see why they picked Cruise..they wanted to make money on this movie, and the only way a movie about Nazis gets ratings in Hollywood is if they are getting shot and killed like in Terrintino's Inglorious bastards. There are no good "nazi" germans in hollywood In order for films like Valkyrie to get ratings in America they need big actors to star in it. Unfortunately, in my opinion they picked the wrong one. Sad because I am really into the German resistance movement. But overall the movie was a good movie, the effects were good, and the story was well written
By the way jughead.. i like what your doing, picking an individual film and "reviewing it" keep em comming.. what's the next movie??
My intent is to not praise a movie for the sake of praise; but, rather expose a lousy movie or actor for what they are and the reasons why. That way there is a vehicle available for disparraging remarks without hurting feelings and throwing threads off track. Thanks for your support.
Actually Tom Cruise isn't a bad guy to be around, you might not like his acting or something but for a rather short guy he doesn't have that "small man" attitude many seem to have. He is about 5'6" or 7", my good buddy in Roundup is 5'8" for sure and he is a bit taller than Cruise. When that section of Far and Away was filmed here in Billings Montana (Oklahoma land rush), both Rob and I got part time work on the set. I hired on to tend horses (curry, saddle, walk out), and Rob got a couple of walk on parts since he has a full beard, his own hats and nasty jeans. No costume necessary, and he didn't tower over the star. That said, he and Ron Howard were very neat people to be around when I was in their presence. Funny, friendly, and talkative about how they liked the scenery and the open spaces of Montana. Niclole Kidmann wasn't around enough for me to make a judgement on her personality, she sure is pretty though. Better looking without make-up in my eyes.
I enjoyed that almost as much as I liked watching him get beaten with a kendo stick in "The Last Samuri". He's a dirtball.
Do you know the man personally or do you just dislike his religion? Or that he will make more money a week than most of us will make in a lifetime?
I never judge anyone by their politics or religion. My opinion is based on the perception I get from looking at him. He presents this smarmy condescending aura and the tone of his voice just makes me want to punch him in the head. I really wish that I could hold something less superficial against him; but, I can't. I don't like him. There are a ton of people I don't like based on superficial first impressions. I am a pretty good judge of charecter and I don't think he has any. Brad
That's too bad, I liked the way he shook my hand and looked me in the eye. I can tell more about a person from that somehow.
He was probably acting...... we might as well air this out while we are here too, I do not like: fat Steven Segal, singing Chuck Norris, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Paula Dean and her kids, Anyone on the cast of Sex in the City, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Jerry Cooney, Mike tyson, George Stephanopolis, Regis Philbin, Bill Maher, Pete Coors, Ken Grossman, Kirsti Ally, Rachael Ray, Demi Moore and there are a bunch of others.
I don't particularly care for any number of those people either, but only their on-screen personalities. I've never met any of them so don't really have an opionin. However, Cruise may well have been acting but when he squatted down on his haunches and asked me why I was cleaning the gunk out of a set of hooves and trimming the "frog" he seem genuinely interested in the "why". He really seem to want to know. If he went off later and laughted about the "rube" cleaning the crap out of a hoof, I don't know.
Wait a minute!!! Ron Howard? Opie?! Okay I like that fella'. Don't know anything about his politics, oops wait he did a commercial for Obama I think, but anyway he's a darn fine director.
That's indicative of his patronizing tendency that I had only assumed. How appropriate would it have been for you to ask why he presented his character a certain way? it wouldn't; but, he felt it more than appropriate to ask you what you were doing and why you were doing it and managed to leave you feeling privileged by his conversation. I guess I am just a blue collar cynic. Please don't take my critique personally.
I want to punch richard gere more than once in the face. that said, I completely agree with most posts here specially Suzies and Brads. I would add Martin Sheen to the list but, I have always liked him but hate his politics. gEORGE cLOONEY is another I loathe. Who else is left? oh susan saranwrap, sean pennhead and joy behar. Geeze, just what the hell Charles Bronson saw in sean pennhead, ill never be able to fathom a good guess. I admit that that pennhead is a good actor, but hes such a fragging hollow dipwad. I mean, c'mon-the jerk is always getting into trouble beating photographers up, but then wants to come off as being someone who really gives a flying truck, about people? That guy is as false as Jack Nicholsons "smile" when he was playing the Joker in: Batman. Sorry im off topic-tom cruise, tom cruise, tom cruise-now were back on topic ;-)
