This miniature set of medals ( Finnish ww2 ). In pretty good condition. Perhaps not as "fancy" as the big medals but I like and collect these all the same.

obviously very similar to the Soviet and German versions - chest rows as I call them, or a smaller version given with the larger version upon awarding Kai ?

The small ones were often bought by the soldiers themselves and used at ceremonies. For daily use they'd rather use recalls and on occasions the real ones, but I doubt a soldier would carry the chest row , except on a parade . I like the circular ones with the Finnish Lion.

I think they got the smaller version at the same time as the normal medal, but the miniature version was to be used - at least in Finland I think - on the tuxedo or other evening dress when the people attended all kinds of parties and banquets etc...

These just came in from Belgium. They are a set of Belgian WW2 medals. I tired to pick some nice ones that would differ from the usual War Cross and victory medals.

Very nice medals Skipper ....I like the detailing of the lion on the "commemorative WW2 Victory medal (military version with swords)". I also like the French war crosses alot.

Hey Potier....relics indeed! .....did you dig for these yourself? any more info on them?

    -----------------------------

Just posted another WW1 medal group shown in the Imperial thread (EK2 and Hindenburg cross).

No unfortunaly , but I have an appointment .... It's a friend of mine , he live in the D-Day area and know very well the place ... He has got a small private museum but really amazing ... These helmets were "burried" with the boddies during the battle but when the Germans buddies were transfered at Orglandes Cemetery and La Cambe all the equipments are stayed at the same spot ... and digged now ... Normaly I will go in september for a WE research .

It is signed by Col. Richard Cole (Lt. in those days), Robert Hite (Lt. Crew 16), David J Thatcher (Sgt. Crew 7) and Tom Griffin (Lt. Crew 9). I found it in a small gallery in Big Bear, CA.
I have this post on Texson's thread - "Lunch with Dick Cole", but thought it would fit in well here too. Let me know if this violates protocol?

    Great additions Kai.

This goodie is a genuine M-1935 model cap, it's somewhat battered, but hey first hand find

last weekend ! It's a Captain Medic (with administrative assignment identification on his cap). I wasn't even aware the laurel leaves existed on some cap under the grenade symbol.
The difference with the field medic is the color and the caducet symbol (with the snake) versus leaves on this one.

I sewed the red edges myself and took the golden rim + buttons from another kepi. With two wrecks I made one good one. Of course I saved the one with the rarer embroided insignia . I was full of moth eggs but surprisingly not attacked yet, so I washed it as well . The inner frame is from some kind of bakelite so unlike modern caps and kepis with cardboard protection the old versions can be easilly showered without any damage.

German death card I got at an antique shop the other day. He received the E.K. II and the Eastern Front "frozen meat" medal.

Can you imagine having to go through all that stuff to not only get the KC but all those tank destruction badges as well? And can you also imagine having to use those magnetic mines? I have a friend who actually knew a vet who got a few tank destruction badges. His job-planting magnetic mines on T-34's. Anyone who can do that definately has some balls.
