A big follow up to Harry Potter or another indie? Variety reports that Daniel Radcliffe will play the lead in a remake of the 1930 Best Picture winner All Quiet on the Western Front, originally based on Erich Maria Remarque's novel. The WWI drama tells the story of Paul Baumer (Radcliffe's role), a young German soldier fighting in the trenches of France. Radcliffe seems to like acting on the stage, as he'll be appearing on Broadway in How to Succeed Without Really Trying next year and will shoot this Western Front remake in spring of 2012 (a long time from now).

I HOPE they keep to the original. I have both the original and made for TV remake w/ Richard Thomas as Paul, and Ernest Borgnine as Kaz.

I wonder who will be playing the Slim Summerville character?

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this. I think it would be interesting to see an new interpretation of the book...from the perspective of 2012 or whenever it will be, since we saw the the '30s and the '80s (or was it the late '70s?) version.
And just as the technical abilities of the 'John-boy' version were leagues ahead of the first version, what will be obtainable today......well....it could be amazing.
On the other hand, I can't help thinking that there are so many other stories that could be told from the the First World War.
Anyone ever see 'Westfront 1918'? Sort of a German film version of 'All Quiet".

Not a fan of remakes but All Quiet on the Western Front to my knowledge hasn't been subject to a bad "remake" yet.

As an added bonus, take someone like Radcliffe and I'm sure it will renew interest in the war for "new" generations.

Bongopete: I've been looking for a copy of Westfront 1918 for ages and can't find one, the few VHS copies I've tracked down are far out of my budget. :( It seems like perhaps the rights to the film are transfered to someone who either can't do anything with the film or doesn't realize they own them which isn't that far fetched for a lot of older media.

I've heard it's on par with if not better than AQOTWF though. Most of the cast were German veterans from the war and I hear the battlefield scenes were the "Avatar" of the day (meaning they broke new ground).

Hi Bong/ the remake was made in the 70s. I remember when it was first aired on TV, I wasnt supposed to be watching it and doing my math homework when it was on. I elected to watch it anyway and stayed up late to do my math homework. I thought it was well worth it ;-)) Also, ive always liked Richard Thomas, and he does a great job in the movies he appears in. He was also in the remake of: The Red Badge of Courage, which I would love to see printed on DvD. He was also in: Mission of the Shark w/ Stacy Keach.

Also on: The Red Badge of Courage. Richard Thomas played Audie Murphys character role. Gerold S. O'Laughlin (who was the Police Sergeant in the TV Series: The Rookies) played the role of Thomas's "mentor" who was a Yankee Sergeant.

Why not use English speaking German actors.

Beats me! Why do we have to make a Hollywood version of successful popular foreign films?

Only for the reason that i have no time to do the job! Sorry, just joking.

I´ve seen both movies and both were good made, but i am not sure if it will be better than the old ones. They often make modern remakes like gigantic action movies with a lot more explosions and other effects.
Lets see!

Regards

I have to say that the quality and science of sound effects back then leave a lot to be desired. Shells flying overhead always sound like a kazoo to me!! lol I don't think making it with more explosions and such is a bad thing. I thought the scene in the 70s tv version with the town being shelled and horses killed much more frightfull. I have always thought that if you make a movie with the intent of it being an 'antiwar' subject that you should drop having your actors take a political position or attempt to make a statement with editorial means and simpy show how truely brutal war is and let THAT make your position for you.

Hi bongopete,

true words. But let the poiltical position out and show them how useless some of the heroic soldiers had died! For an hill that is lost some hours later or for a wonderful swampy aera! A good example is the movie "Die Brücke", it is a german movie made in B/W with an special atmosphere in it. The remake has some more action in it but it isn´t as good as the original. If you haven´t seen it, its worth an look!

Regards

Ulrich

Hi Bong, Ulrich, RAy,

Bong, its been a few years since I last saw earlier episode sof The Waltons with Richard Thomas still in hem, but they were still very good as I always thought the series was very well made. I dont remember which Cable TV Station (at least in my area) was showing The Waltons but, when I remembered about it being on and if I wasnt watching anything better? id watch the 2 episodes played. I THINK they were played on Nick or either TV Land? Richard Thomas is one of those few, who were able to escape the typecast thing. Ive seen him in several other movies as well, and I enjoy his acting all the more-knowing his Waltons character.

Hi Ulrich, thanks on letting it "leak" out that there was a remake of Die Brucke. Ive never seen nor heard anything about a remake but, id love to see it too-but after I finally get to see the original. Bernhard Wicki is one of my alltime favorite Directors. After all, he DID direct the German Battle scenes in: The Longest Day and also had his mittens in the filming of one of my alltime most favorite movies which has many of my alltime most favorite actors in it-most of the German ;-))--in a great movie called: Decision Before Dawn w/ Oscar Werner, Hans-Christian Blech, O.E.Hasse, Wilfrid Seyfarth, (SP?) and Hildegard Knef (as the Germans) and Richard Basehart as Lt. Rennick, Gary Merrill as his Commanding Officer. Im with you all on that I think the 1930 version is the best and will never be bested. After all, that movie too, was Directed by one of my alltime most favorite Directors--Lewis Milestone.

Ray, thanks for the likn for Die Brucke, ive never seen any of it before and will try to access it here at home ;-))

Back to Ulrich, I have a question to ask you on another movie and was wondering if you ever saw the original or the remake? The movie in question is: Der Teufels General. I knew of the original but didnt learn that they remade it untill by chance-I saw a poster about the movie-in some City Susanne ans I were travelling through, somewhere in Germany back in 2000. Have you ever heard of either of these? or seen either of them? If so? please let me know what you thought about them. I THINK that-another favorite actor of mine who is German--I THINK he was in it-the he im referring to is: Curt Jurgens.

I say, just from seeing the trailer, I know ill like this movie ;-))

Ulrich, if you dont mind me pestering you again? can you name more and older black and white German made war movies? Im aware of and have seen: Stalingrad: Dogs Do You Want To Live Forever (I cant correctly spell the German name for it so I have to in English ;-)) BTW, I have and have seen boith the excellent: Stalingrad and Downfall ;-)) If you know of more modern German made War movies about WWII or other wars? please let them as well ;-))

Edit: German name found for Dogs Do You Want To Live Forever--which is: Hunde, wollt ihr ewig Leben.

Hi Carl,

here are some titles of german war movies:

Der Stern von Afrika, its of H.J. Marseille

Haie und kleine Fische, its off an mine clearing boat

U-Boote Westwärts, thats more an propaganda movie from 1940

Here is a link to the remake of "Die Brücke" from W. Panzer

Die Brücke/THE BRIDGE 2008 UNOFFICIAL ENGLISH SUB CONFLICT SCENE1 - divxklip.de - Millionen von Video-Clips sind hier...

Yes i´ve seen the Teufels General with Curd Juergens. The movie was made after the stors of Ernst Udet. It isnt bad but without Curd it were not so good.

I dont know but i never seen an other german made war movie Carl.

Hope it helps and Decision in dawn ( Entscheidung im Morgengrauen) is a good movie too!

Take care

Ulrich

Hi Ulrich, thanks for the additional titles. I have actually heard of Der Stern von Afrika but never seen it---yet. I know a place that sells it here in the USA and have been wanting to buy it ;-)) Those others sound great and thanks for the link for Die Brucke ;-))

Jurgens was a great actor. One of my alltime favorite movies with him in it is: The Enemy below opposite Robert Mitchum. If you ahvent seen this movie? its a must see. Some of the other Germans are: Kurt Krueger-who was great in Sahara-opposite Humphrey Bogart, Bruce Bennett, Dan Duryea and J. Carroll Naish. He was a German fighter pilot that gets shot down by Bogies Sherman Tank/crew. Back to Enemy Nelow. Theodor Bikel Bikel actually is Austrian but makes a great German ;-)) was the 2nd in command of that Uboat while Jurgens was the CO. I love it when he plays: the De Sauer March.

I was wondering which Luftwaffe General that Der Teufels General was portraying but seeing its about Udet-that movie will be of interest to me ;-))

I'd love to see a good German movie made about von Bismarck as well as about von Stauffenburg. I know they were making a new movie about him to counter the Tom Cruise hollywood made movie about him which came out about 18 months ago.
