Aren't there any other stories to make into movies about WW1? I liked both older versions of AQOTWF a great deal, but really, ANOTHER ONE? It was very refreshing to see one about the Christmas Truce that came out a few years ago (I can't remember the name right now). There's got to be more subject matter out there. And I think that the Harry Potter guy is a bit type-cast right now to play a very powerful charactor like Paul Baumer, but that's just me.

    Hi Carl,

was a pleasure to me! I have seen the Enemy below ( Duell im Atlantik) good made movie. There is a old german movie about Bismarck made in 1940 it is called "Bismarck". Here is a trailer to an good made documentation on Bismarck.

That was my point about the 1979 version with Richard Thomas. It was so close to when 'The Waltons' had been running on tv, that I think he (Thomas) was too typecast as Johnboy from that show. I had a hard time watching AQOTWF and not think of Johnboy whenever I saw Thomas. After all these years though, I can watch the 1979 version (actually again just a few weeks ago) and thought he did quiet nicely in it.
Perhaps the same will happen to Potter.

I would love to see a new film made, taking place at the western front, that had access to something similar to the resources and money that films like 'Waterloo' and 'War and Peace' (the 1960s Russian film version) had.

Anyone ever see a film called 'Fraulein Doktor'? I think it came out in the late 60s, or early 70s. It was one of those Italian/Spanish/French/German coproductions that you saw a lot of back then. It had a rather spectacular, though brief, sequence of a gas attack on the western front. A bit ott but was still pretty cool.

The badest scene where Paul Bäumer killed the french shoemaker(?). Interesting to read his thoughts in the book about the war and all during the time in the shell crater.

Call me crazy but though based on a German Book the original movie was a Hollywood production. I find the original by far the best though the 70's remake was of a good quality. There is just something chilling about the original. Maybe it is that the special effects never get in the way of the story. I have shown the originally to quite a few High School History classes over the years. It takes some setting up and some hand holding about the technology of film making. I have got great responses from the kids and it is something they always remark on when writing of their highlights of the year. The story is just great, I hope they do not f' it up.
