The Seventies: The decade when men stopped being men ?

The nature of masculinity was up for grabs and it was in the home that challenges to the traditional male role were most apparent.

For decades, the adult population had led virtually segregated lives. Working-class men tended to spend their days with workmates and their evenings at the pub or watching sport.

Women stayed at home and built up entirely separate circles of friends, based around ' feminine' activities.

But affluence was eroding the old bastions of segregation and the young couples of a new generation expected to spend far more time together.

Research in 1970 found men now devoting their weekends to their immediate families- - gardening, doing DIY around the house and going on outings and shopping trips.

I have the yoke of house-husbandry placed upon my shoulders. My wife is a special needs teacher, and there is no meatworks for me to work at. I clean a supermarket butchershop to remind myself that I can still work hard, but it's only for three hours a day. The rest of my daytime is spent attending to the needs of our little daughter.

I think women make far too many complaints about the difficulty of child rearing. Too many complaints, full stop. We don't have equality of the sexes, it's PC bullshit.

 

It really didn't take hold in the US until the 80's. But yes, today more and more males are manholes not men.

 

I can't speak of the 70's, as I was born in '78. But some of the fellows I see out and about now a days scare me a touch. I have a niece who has a boyfriend...she brought him to my home to meet me and I (In practice for when my daughter is 25 and old enough to date) met him at the door with a pistol. Slide back, gentlemen, slide back...nobody getting hurt here.
ANyways, I sat him down and said, "Hi Jeff...I'm the uncle. I'm more dangerous than the dad and brother because I'd never be a suspect. Come on into my office and I'll show you some guns." We proceeded to talk for an hour or so. Very nice kid. Longish hair for my taste...didn't like guns, and was a vegan (WTF) but treats the niece good.

You know when a man is not a man...when he takes more time in the bathroom than a women.

 

I'm kind of glad to have retired from the Navy before it became overrun with feminity. Most of the engineering / dirty work ratings are disappearing. They are being "outsourced" because maintenance and making stuff from steel and aluminum in dirty sweaty shops is somehow not a "core function" of the Navy any more. Playing video games with drones is....
With the mass induction of women many fine Navy traditions have been emasculated. Crossing the Line (eg., equator) / Shellback initiation and the Chief's initiation have been turned into jokes that are more like social get togethers than a serious test of faternity they used to be. That's fine for women who see no need for proving themselves to their peers but it doesn't turn boys into men like the old versions did.
They hand out "stress cards" in basic training now. You can't handle what the DI throws at you? Hold out you stress card and whine its stressing you out too badly to continue. You get to sit on the side lines but still get credit for the exercise.....

It's just sad....

 

Totally agree. And when the real stuff starts to fly, what will they do then? I saw it during Desert Shield/Storm and that was nothing.

 

Wow...I'm certain I heard a Tarzan Jungle yell from this thread.....

Strong (meaning character as much as physical) capable men deserve Strong capable women; and vice versa.

Personally, I don't have time for wimpy simpering females or men.

I will point out though that it is still not uncommen that when men do something around the house they get thanked, whereas when a woman does it, it is just expected.

I appreciate courtesy and having doors opened for me, but I also give courtesy and am as likely to hold the door open for a man or women to precede me if I get to the door first.

The real feminist movement was not about emasculating men or women dominating men, it was allowing people of either gender to reach their full potential without gender bias. People who are confident of their own skills and abilities do not want or expect preferential treatment; they only want artificial barriers removed.

I have basic tastes, this is shared by the whole family and the recipe works and suits the whole family well.
1)Men have short hair, women long hair, not the opposite.
2)Men wear trousers: women skirts, not the opposite.
3) Mrs Skipper is the one who is elegant and wears make up. She loves it, she is gorgeous and we all love her like that. I love it when she goes shopping to get new clothing and so does she.
We live in 2010 so I'm not a macho type, even though Mrs Skipper says I am one . I often cook and help her with the chores. She appreciates it. I do it because I want to , not because I have to.
Most of all she makes me believe I'm boss at home...... We have a deep sense of familly and respect the eldrely, those who served and our institutions. When the whole planet falls apart I shall still teach those values to my kids. I respect others as long as they respect me and don't try to impose their views.
Those who think this is old fashioned can go to the love parade with their pink poodle

 

I wasn't even born yet..So I can't really relate to much here I was born in '81..My dad was growing up around that decade though. He graduated H.S. in '74

I wasn't from the 70's either so I can't really comment on any of this, but isn't it easier to just help out around the house than it is to complain and end up sleeping alone in the dog house!

I've always had a short/military crew cut
My hair just grows so dog gone fast if it just barley grows past my ears I need it cut.
