It seems that the problem with this tactical approach is its extreme dangerousness. If the opposition was so weak that a charge of half-tracks could rout them, it would not matter what extra armor you had on your half-track.

Ah, that would be the M3A1 Scout Car I believe, it was close to the size of a M5 Half-Track, quite large. I think it could carry seven passengers in the back, plus one more up front, along with the driver. I believe it was armed with two machine guns one in the back and one up front.

My favorite is the Universal, or Bren Carrier, they were quite useful in the role of an APC/IFV even if they were originally part of a project by Carden-Loyd to make tankettes which had very little use on the battlefield.. The Germans even liked them, converting them into Panzerjager units which carries a Panzershreck mount.

I don't know, it was an amphibious version of a GMC 2.5 ton truck I think. I guess it would be fine, being used for so many things, and the metal to make it amphibious gave it some protection. I suppose its ok, but that's just my opinion and I have no authority here.

Another point for the halftrack is the ability to debark troops through the rear door, a feature subsequently incorporated in most APCs. While the Kangaroo types provided the best protection while travelling, embarked troops were vulnerable climbing in or out of the vehicle, which of course they would usually be doing in proximity to the enemy.
