I am a retired University of Washington Professor of Pediatrics now living on the Oregon coast. I am writing a historical fiction novel about WWII events on the Oregon coast and in in Hokkaido Japan.
There's an online document with a title of something like "Defending the Americas" and or "continental defense" that should provide some background. There are also a fair number of descriptions of the baloon bombing and the bombing raid (if one plane counts as a raid) on Oregon.
I've just discovered WW II fiction, and I'm extremely interested. The books area of the forum is (rightly) non-fiction focused. Any thoughts on fiction writers? Good, bad, otherwise? Genres/Books from specific times during the war more plentiful than others? Lastly Marcos... How is the book coming?
I kist picked up "No Less Than Victory" by Jeff Shaara. A novel of WW II based during the Bulge. Lots of references to real events and individuals of course...
That is the third of four WW2 novels by Shaara. The first was The Rising Tide, followed by The Steel Wave, then came No Less Than Victory. The newest one, The Final Storm, which deals with the Pacific, is due out this week. I read the first three, which I found enjoyable.
Care to shed any light on the theater/events covered in The Rising Tide and The Steel Wave? Thanks, Bryan
As a fellow Washingtonian, I'm really interested in what you find out and in eventually reading your book. We vacation at the Oregon Coast every year. I do know that when we camp at Cape Lookout State Park, there is a hiking trail. It's not a bad hike and you will see what's left of a B-17 bomber that crashed into the side of the mountain. I don't know much more than that, but here's a link to get you started. Oregon Hikes - Cape Lookout on the Oregon Coast ~Karen
No problem. Rising Tide - North Africa and Sicily Steel Wave - D-Day and Normandy No Less than Victory - Post-D Day to VE Day Final Storm - Pacific All of the books focus on US involvement through a series of recurring characters.
The Military Channel has the documentary "The Last Japanese Secret Weapons of WW2" on today. Interesting stuff, relevant. Hope you have the opportunity to catch it.
Doctor, Best of luck to you with your retirement and your post-vocational writing career! I posted an incident concerning a kid in the Hitler Youth's DJs related to my family and me by someone prominent many years ago that had taken place in Berlin shortly before the war. If interested, you can read it under the “WWII General” topic of the General Discussion category. Perhaps you might keep it in mind for your next project after completing your current one. It would seem to me to be eminently suited to form the basis of an historical novel around which you could weave a poignant imaginative tale of a family caught between two antithetical nations and worlds. At any rate, I wish you a long, healthy and prosperous retirement! Best regards Dave
