It looks like the 1942 model. Or the KV-1S?

I don't think it is a KV-1S. All the photos I have seen, show only one periscope mount, on the left side of the turret roof. The photo shows one on the right and the left of the turret roof. And, didn't the KV-1S have a more bulbous gun housing on the turret? The KV-1 gun housin in the photo looks rather straight-edged to me.

I would say the lonesome wheel is a KV as well as the gun barrel is the same dimensions and the lower hull slants the same, My opinion

I see a more pronounced flare inwards at the bottom of the turret side in the KV-1C, although there were several different turrets - and rounded outwards in the -1S.

I did think originally that the turret in the photo looks cast however, it's not as clear as i'd like as some of the welded turrets have a slightly 'cast' look. the turrets were swapped about between models apparently pretty randomly too, which complicates things.

The lower bow plate and the bit of angle iron across the nose seem to be mostly seen only on the 'A' models, but not solely.

could well be - I wasn't happy the slope on the bit leading up to the mudguard was right, and it appears a bit smaller to me than the KV one even though it's closer to the camera?

The gun barrel I think you're right about though - hadn't seen that before :)

actually I thought that too until yesterday but some at least of the cast ones still seem to have it as well - it's also not helped by the fact that so many net photos are wrongly labelled too :(

    This thread is definitely worth a read (sorry i know it's on a different forum);

I'm leaning more towards one of the '41 models now, but still not totally convinced.

the book I used was writtern by Chris Ellis and to put a slit in a cast is difficult especialy on the size of this one

It is either a 1941 model with cast turret or the 1942 model with the reinforced cast turret. Both turrets were the same shape but one was thicker than the other. Difficult to tell the two apart from the side.

It looks exactly like the front idler wheel of a KV-1. My guess is that the tank had burnt out, destroying the suspension, therefore, the hull will be almost sitting on the ground. Thus the front idler wheel is much lower to the ground

Think You're right - what's your view on the main KV in the picture?

I'm with m kenny, Model 1941 or 1942 with a cast(possibly reinforced turret). The differences are slight and the consensus seems to be that the Soviets did not have any hard and fast rules(unlike the Germans) to differentiate between Models.

I think I must join you both on the '41 - still can't quite put my finger on why I don't think the '42 though - Will have another look tomorrow perhaps - Maybe when Carl gets the actual photo he can give us a clearer copy. Thanks.

    My observations:
    Red-Appliqué armor.
Blue-Cut out for gunsight; indicative of the ZiS-5 tank gun.
Green-Periscopes on either side of turret.
    Yellow-Cast turret.
Grey-Turret overhang; very hard to tell, but possibly slight(easiest way to tell the uparmored turret, would be the rear turret machinegun mounting, but that is impossible in the photo)

What we need are any hard and fast rules to differentiate between the Model 1941 and Model 1942. However, the Zaloga books that I have on the KV-1 series are vague on the differences, and imply that the due to variations in construction there really aren't any hard and fast rules.

I'm leaning towards the Model 1941, but I think it really comes down to a coin toss(50% chance of being right and 50% chance of being wrong)

Yea thats thee thing there because the T-34 doesn't have the long exhaust pipes in the back, only a very tiny bit of it, and it has armor on over thee exhaust pipes. So I would think its a potability a T-34...Not sure exactly but its a 50 50% chance I have it right or wrong but I'll say its a T-34 because of thee looks of it.

Axonn, I think your looking at the wrong tank.

The tank in question I have circled in green. The exhaust pipes I have circled in red and the front hull superstructure in blue.

From those two obvious points, it can't be a T-34.

BTW, nice pic of a "flying" BT, I've seen it a few times. The one I'd really like to see is the "after" photo, just to view what the suspension looked like once it landed. You know, see if any of the roadwheels were still attached:D
