The thing here is that Paul Revere wasn't charging through towns ringing bells, or firing waring shots or anything. He had set up the lamp signals in case he was intercepted on his way into Charlestown where he would start to quietly warn his compatriots in the "Sons of Liberty" group on his way to tell both Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the "Regular/Redcoat" troops were coming to arrest them.

He wasn't taken prisoner until after his mission was completed, his two co-waring riders escaped the capture, and he too was set loose without a horse in short order. How S. Palin can have any idea of what he said to his captors in the few moments of his incarceration is beyond me. He made it back to the Green, on foot, to hear the first shots fired. If he said anything to the British Regulars in his time of being held and questioned, I have no idea how this modern day non-historian would have a clue.

Paul Revere himself, in his own disposition letters mentions nothing of the sort. I don't much care what "support" she might gain from the "Tea Party" and others who like the woman. She is as dumb as a box of hair sometimes, and proves it over and over again without prompting, or "gotcha" questions.

I defy anyone to have a microphone stuck in their face and not come out with some sort of mistake, like this one, I know I couldn't take the pressure of people being in my face all of the time. She's pushed and prodded all of the time to make comments about every little thing, it's inevitable.

I am convinced Sarah Palin must be smarter than she comes across or she wouldn't have gotten where she has - all jokes about politics aside. The problem, in my opinion, is she has bought into her own hype. She tries very hard to come across as that folksy, I'm just like the average person, because that's the platform that shot her to fame. I think she just comes across as silly.

I think that what's wrong with our politicians rarely has anything to do with lack of intelligence, although some are obviously smarter than others, but it's all the other things that come along with fame and power.

But then, with that said, I don't care for this woman, I don't think she has what it takes to be the President of the United States, she may be smart, but that's not enough and I, quite frankly, don't think she comes across that way. She may be charasmatic, but not in a way that I feel represents my country well, for one thing I think she is too polarizing and self-centered. And I really just can't quite figure out how her resigning as governor is supposed to help her or show her in a good light. She's either an incredible lightweight who just didn't have what it took to stick it out, or she just couldn't take the heat, and whether it's fair or not, our presidents have to deal with a whole of of heat from every direction, so if she couldn't take it as governor she can't take it as president.

I just think Sarah Palin is just a whole lotta nothing when it comes to the presidential stakes, I wish the media would quit wasting our time. If they'd leave her be, she'd fade back into the woodwork.

Even before she made this latest gaff, she must have "mis-remembered" most of the Statue of Liberty's history. But then again she isn't running for office, she is on a family vacation which just happens to hit all of the states Presidential aspirates want to be in. Oh please.

It can be easy to "flub" when you have mikes stuck in your face, but if you are on a tour looking for media exposure one really should have a basic grasp of what they are talking about. Compare her "history" of the Statue of Liberty with history as it exists.

But Clementine makes a good point, the problem however is that she is LOOKING for exposure, not being ambushed by the media which isn't her own employer; Fox News.

Or...or....gulp...It could be....she....she...MISSPOKE. I know that comes as a shocker to the "she's an idiot" crowd. But if you look at Mr. President....he tends to misspeak a bit also. This is a thread that is destined to only cause a flame up. Guess what? There is no such thing as an honest, plain speaking politician on this level. You know why? Too many people in powerful positions to please. Politicians don't run the country, make the policy, or speak for the people. They never have and they never will. If you want to be angry at people, get angry at the under 1%'ers. There is power behind the "throne". To bitch about anyone on an election ticket is nonsensical.

Hey somethin' else I'm curious about.

"Dawes and Prescott managed to elude the British and complete the mission, but Revere was captured. Furthermore, his warnings sufficiently rattled the British that they let him go — but without his horse. He returned on foot to Lexington, where he managed to hide a trunk with Hancock’s letters to keep it from being captured, but missed the battle."

So old Paul gets himself captured, spills his guts to the enemy, runs home to hide a bunch of letters and conveniently misses the battle? and HE becomes the Hero? Probably sold the horse too.

But you'll notice there is no media story (or poem) that states, "Oh they got us this time but we'll be back."

No, you need at least two out of those three. ;)

Oh, but I think perhaps your system is the problem.

The primary system & the two party system seems to result in a charismatic but poorly qualified President.
Our Prime Minister has a master's degree in economics and the charisma of a bowl of cereal. :D
I doubt he would be electable under your system, but in the Westminster system he needs at least half of the Parliament to have confidence in his leadership.

Its not so much the system as it is our electorate. A great example is something that happened to me in college. My sophmore and junior year, I ran a student law enforcement organization on campus-which actually supplemented the campus Police. It made me and my organization less than popular as we wrote parking tickets and shut down parties that got out of control.

So, there I was with nine years of military experience, and I effectively led an organization. I ran for Student Body President with an agenda, and connections to carry out my agenda, which would have bettered the school and left an indelible mark for that year's graduates. I only had one opponent, a younger female with lots of charisma, and no brains.

There was a rally at which we were both allowed to speak. I got up and spelled out my agenda. She got up and her speech consisted only of the words "I think I can do a better job." She was overwhelmingly elected.

She didn't accomplish a single thing. Myself, I turned my energies in a different direction, and I helped create a Police Academy on campus that exists to this very day. At the dedication ceremony, several students came up and apologized for voting against me, lamenting voting for a person who only wanted a title and nothing more. They were most ticked because she hadn't promised anything (you get what you pay for) and therefore they couldn't complain that she hadn't broken a promise.

Here is a little better account posted by The Center for Public Integrity (as accessed by Huffington Post):

Sarah Palin's much-ridiculed story of Paul Revere isn't entirely wrong, but it's badly twisted. Revere didn't ring bells or fire shots, and he was riding to warn two fellow rebels (S. Adams, J. Hancock) that the British were coming to arrest them -- not to warn the British "that they weren't going to be taking away our arms."

…It's also true that Revere spoke to British officers -- though that was by no means his intent. He was seized by a British patrol before he got to Concord. Revere, under questioning, told British officers that 500 Americans were coming to confront them. As he recollected in 1798:

[An officer] asked me if I was an express? I answered in the afirmative. He demanded what time I left Boston? I told him; and aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.

Another officer "[c]lapped his pistol to my head, called me by name, & told me he was going to ask me some questions, & if I did not give him true answers, he would blow my brains out," Revere recalled.

He was still in British custody when the first shots were fired at Lexington, "which appeared to alarm them very much," Revere said. The British later released Revere, after taking the horse he had been riding.

But Revere makes no mention of specifically "warning" the British against trying to seize arms. In fact, the Americans moved most of the arms before Gen. Gage's troops could find them.

BTW, Revere was the hero for that ride, but he was not such a hot soldier it would seem, after one engagement (I forget the particulars) he was dismissed from the army. I think it was for insubordination, but don't hold me to it.

50 states + DC, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands & Mariana Islands = 56

The 57th is the mystery state I guess.
Perhaps he was visiting the ghost of Earhart on Howland Island?

This thread is getting lame and off topic. It slid from palin to Obama to the number of states and Muslim countries.... Maybe it's time to close it. May I suggest you all move on to more interesting horizons on the forum. ;)
