Any published writers out there who might share hints on publishers and getting published? I have a book (WWII nonfiction) that needs a publisher and was wondering who might be recommended for a first-timer? Who's good to work with, not good, receptive, how to find the right 'fit' - whatever hints and help would be most appreciated. Thx, John
First, consider the publishers that have released books that you like; check their web sites for writer's guidelines. (Some "publishers" are just book packagers who couldn't help you even if they wanted to. Don't query anyone until you know whom you're approaching.) Buy a copy of the 2011 Writer's Market; go through the info there and look also at the various publishers' sites.
Depends a bit on the subject matter (i.e. which geographical market might have greater interest), but I can certainly recommend Pen and Sword for the UK/Europe. Best of luck, Marc
I've heard that some of the publish on demand places are often a good place to start. The ebook companies also seem to be more willing to take new authors (less sunk cost in paper and printing). There was a good but rather old thread on this on another forum. I'll see if I can find it but am not having much luck.
