Just wondering really if soldiers got to keep their uniform after they were demobbed, or if they had to hand it back?
Welcome to the forum In the British forces they were given civilian clothes. My father kept his for at least 20 years ! Here's a link with a photo of the British suits BBC - WW2 People's War - The infamous Demob Suit
Ok thanks - I was just wondering if they did or didnt. Was going to have a dig around to see what had happened to my grandads if they did!
i dont know what happened after the war years but when i left the RAF in the 90's we handed back all our kit except our NO1 uniform, shoes and boots, which we kept. i guess because its the only part of our kit that was made to measure and who would want my smelly old boots anyway.
Ah well it was an interesting thought anyway. I have been trying to figure out what he actually did during the war. Know he was part of 13th HQ corps, but also seems to have been a desert rat as well. Have sent off for service record, but wont hear anything from that for a while!
