It looks to be true, apparently her drug usage finally caught up with her. I wasn't that much of a fan to be honest, but may she rest in peace.
Unfortunate for her fans and family, but sadly comes under the heading of not really a surprize if half of the stories about her are true.
Always sad when someone self-destructs. I don't understand it, the whole mind-set and grip of addiction. How awful it must be for a person to be so addicted to something so potentially lethal that they prefer to take that risk rather than give it up. A waste of a life and talent.
To be quite frank with you, I have no compassion for her. She knew what drugs do to people the first time that she injected, smoked or swallowed that first hit. I have made it quite plain to my children that if they make the choice to use illegal drugs, then they are on their own. They know before they choose to start that I will not counsel such foolishness by them,
My mother thought along the same lines as well. I've lost track of how many times she's told me she had to fire an employee for stealing meds (she works at a health care facility). Anywho, I'm not surprised also.
No idea who she is (some singer, apparently), but while its sad when someone dies ("ask not for whom the bell tolls" and all that), I have to agree that she knew the risks and made a choice. She could have chosen to live the clean lifestyle and be a true role model for her fans, but she chose the fast-fun go-out-in-a-blaze-of-glory path.
Wasted talent. She could have been a nice alternative to all of the junk being put out by "pop" artists but instead she washed out early with drugs.
I think there is something being missed here. I am not a great fan of her’s, nor had even really listened to Amy Winehouse music until her demise. The problem might be based in a basic flaw in the artist and "her" and other’s mentality. Not intelligence, nor "smarts", but how their personality copes with fame. Some seem to crave recognition, but when they get it they cannot quite cope with the way it affects them as "persons". They use drugs and alcohol to "escape" the unforeseen effects of their own success. Go back to Hank Williams Sr., or even further back to Scott Joplin to where he was fighting VD with alcohol and medications which didn’t cure him in 1917, but probably did kill him. The strong personality of Johnny Cash only saved him from being lost to the world as well, he was jailed the last time and told himself "this has to stop", and did it. Force of personality didn’t save Hank Williams Sr., but his son seems to have learned from his father how to cope with both fame and adversity. Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin, and Jimmy Hendrix simply couldn’t cope with the fame they had craved and finally achieved. Is this a case of "be careful what you wish for"?
I agree, Clint. Not a fan of hers, but her inability to "understand" herself led to her demise. I also understand Jeff's point of view. She did this to herself. No one forced her to take drugs. Not a great deal of sympathy here.
it's true on one sense, but knowing close people in my life who struggle with addiction it's not that simple to judge. Addiction is a powerful demon in people's life. So many have struggled, it's a disease that is about self distruction. i do feel bad for people who find themselves in these holes. We try so hard to reach out to them and get them help.. we can only hope that one day they find the will to fight.. to live. It brings tears to my eyes to see my own loved one slowely die to addiction and I can't be mad at him for God knows he has tried to beat this... but one day I know I may lose him and I can't be angry at him for his mistakes. Ultimately it was his choice, I know, but my biggest wish in this world is to give him the strength and courage to fight this before it's too late. It's hard for me to hear of people who die of alcohol/ drug abuse because not only that it takes the life of it's victim, but it breaks the life of those who love them. Sometimes the most beautiful and most talented people fall to addiction. Although it's easy to lose compassion for a junkie, or a drunk but there is more to just picking up a bottle or shooting the needle. It's about self distruction and denial... it's easier to self medicate than to get professional help. Well anyway, not to get off subject, i send my prayers out to Amy Winehouse's family and fans. What a waste of beautiful talent and young life... Rest In Peace Amy , God bless you.
as a counselor you may find my statement odd but I would be curious to find out what her past was like under her parents growing up as well as interviewing her parents if living first hand, true as you all have mentioned it's about choice but what drove her into the maddening choices of drugs ? in part truth as Clint mentions "I cannot handle fame and fortune and this is the best way for me to hide all my fears by going into a fatnasy land where I am not responsible for anyone"
the odd thing about this story is Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain (from Nirvana), Brian Jones and Amy Winehouse all have several things in common, they all were famous musicians, they all were drug abusers, and they all died at the age of 27.
My contention is that it is quite evident now and has been since I was a little boy back in the 1970s that drug use is quite harmful and is highly addictive. Those who begin drug use made a sober, conscious decision to do so, knowing full well the consequences. I too have had friends and family whose lives have been adversely affected by drug use-use that they knew full well the probable outcome before they started. I could not presume to conclude that the addiction is not an illness, but it is an illness that can be prevented by never partaking of the the drug to begin with. I acknowledge that some drug addictions are unavoidable, such as those who become addicted to pain killers. However, to best of my knowledge, drugs like heroin have no medicinal use and others like THC usually do not have medical indications for persons of Winehouse's age. I suppose, given her hell-bent desire to persist in self-destructive ways, she would have found another method to hasten her demise outside the realm of pharmaceuticals.
Sadly her life was short but maybe her tragic ending will send the message to kids out there to stay away from the dangers of drugs. Hopefully someone out there will be inspired to get treatment.
I was absolutely not surprised but nonetheless saddened at such a stupid, tragic, self-destructive waste. She was a genuinely talented interpretative singer ( unlike most of todays' 'mass-produced' stars ). And now all her albums will go to #1, a cult will develop.... Yuk.
