 Anyone else feel that whenever you go and watch a WWII video on youtube that it is swarmed with stupid comments? I mean really everything from stupid arguments, to anti-american comments and rants and Neo-Nazis spreading there ilk. It takes all the fun out of the videos because everyone is making stupid comments, and no one commenting seems to know thing about history AT ALL! For example one guy made an insulting comment on a video clip posted from The Pacific TV series saying that Americans ran scared when ever they faced the Germans attacked them and that it was only air power and artillery that allowed them to advance! What Rubbish!! Your thoughts on this guys?

I bet the guy who wrote that is an "prominent" historian...... I wouldn't pay attention to it. There are similar comments about any country. Just read what they say about Russia, France or the UK ... It's not worth wasting time answering to those ignorants.

I think I´ve seen several insults and abuse on almost every video there is after a while. I think some people like to "stir the nest" just for the "fun" of it.. That is sad.

there should be an automatic moderation tool that would not allow the typing of insults for example

Don't need to stray from this forum to experience the same. That is why I lost interest in it. Drop in every once in a while to check on the progress though.

Youtube is a cess-pool of retardism, and every dull Internerd activity you can possibly imagine, from keyboard hardman to absolute fruitloopishness & bigotry - but on the bright side; also full of fine videos.

Not reading the comments does the trick for me...

I just laugh at the comments. If you look at it this way, ignorance can be part of the entertainment.

It doesn't matter what it is, there are always stupid comments. And it always seems as if there are always "regulars" who post on everything and fight back and forth with each other.

I attempted to make a couple of comments on stories with our local newspaper and you see the same thing, the infighting that always degenerates into name calling and finger pointing. It has discouraged me from even reading or posting.

YouTube always has the lovely people so fluent in profanity. It's always a joy. (Don't get me wrong, I have popped off with a profane word or two in my time, but I am respectful of other people and in public forums.)

Thanks for the input guys! Kinda hard to ignore though when the Top Comments are plastered to the top of the page. I really wish there was an option for viewers to disable or not see comments it would work much better, alas only people who made or posted the video can do that.

I look at the videos and ignore the comments, Even with them on the first page, I find them easy to skip. Some comments are harder than others, but I manage.

If the internet has proven anything to me it's that Sigmund Freud was right and Rene Descartes was wrong: man is the irrational animal par excellence.

When I was younger and more naive or less cynical -take your pick- I used to believe that if I was only better informed and more articulate, I would be able to sway the opinions of loudmouthed, ignorant bigots and "true believers" of various stripes....What I have discovered is that belief and superstition trump facts and rational analysis most of the time. And I'm afraid that in a world of shrinking resources of all sorts, the level of discourse is only going to degenerate further until it loses all semblance of civility. (As the African proverb states: "When the watering hole shrinks, the animals get meaner.")

It certainly gives me no pleasure to draw these conclusions.

....And thank you to Von Poop for coining the term "fruitloopishness." -Delightful.

Yes a number of human emotions regularly trump intelligence...Sexual desire and financial greed seem to be upmost in Western society in my opinion. I have managed at times to "shush" such people with words, this tends to only work in groups where peer pressure plays a helpful part...fortunately for me, i'm 220 pounds so am able to persuade in other ways if all else fails... :) Sometimes i find myself hoping they won't shutup...
"When the watering hole shrinks, the animals get meaner." - An interesting quote - reminds me of "Even the most civilised society is only three missed meals away from revolution..." We are all animals.
Degenerating discourse?...Hmmm...with cultures becoming homogenised and languages being lost at an increasing rate and "standard" language like English adopted by more and more countries...the "avenues" for discourse are broadening all the time...look at this forum...I can have a go at a Yank, Pom and deadbeat Kiwi all at the same time! Gotta luv that for an Aussie. The level of general education and the ability to "relate" to other individuals is certainly being eroded (mostly by technology)...The inability to express oneself in words ALWAYS leads to violence...be it in the home, playground or political forum...this is a complex area...that could go either way...but i think necessity will prevail and we won't see the "end game" of our current course...

The media (now with the great help of the internet) are busy dumbing down the world down to this point. Their mission marches on - to some unbelievable end game.

Exactly how I feel. I have been getting into arguments on YouTube, but they never last. Usually the users who 'win' are the users that know what they are talking about, not the ones that just say things to jab the thigh of other people. Comments about 9/11 are extremely hard to ignore. I've gotten into strong arguments about that.

    Got any extras?

Well said. Before commenting on the sad state of the behavior of society as evidenced on youtube, we need to look at some of the abusers on this forum, the ones that are "really nice when you get to know them".

Words are a fair means of combat. On this site. Nobody gets hurt. Ideas are exchanged. I'd rather read 2 sides vigorously debated , than try to read between the lines of many vanilla posts. Not arguments, just passionate exchange. That's when this site is at it's best.
