Pabstat, I'm guessing that you found that fuel tank in the Fliessthal off to the east side of the trail that goes down the center of the draw. Or, at least that's where I saw one. At the time, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Now that you say fuel tank, I see how that makes sense.

    Cheers,
    hussar

Yes, indeed! I found it quite interesting that in all these years, no one of the local people thought about getting it out of the woods, especially as in the first years after the war, peasants used more or less everything they found on the battlefields. Fuel tanks were often used as rafts for kids, afther cutting them in the right shape or as ...dont know the word...."food-dispenser" for e.g. cattle.

Did you read the Calihan PDF? He describes the sites he went to very well and they are easy to find, even its sometimes quite a hard walk to get there.

My friend found a lot of buttons, claps und buckles, also some ammo boxes and the usal ordnance on the northern slope of 410-400....mostly american stuff. Guess he discovered a place where uniforms and so on have been dumped or lost. I hope that theres no snow in december, so i can go there and have a look. Maybe i will finally hit the jackpot there ;-).

Pabstat, I've been on the road a good bit lately and so have just today gotten a chance to look back in on the forums. What Calihan PDF are you referring to?

I'm hoping to get back out to Reipertswiller, weather permitting, on 18 December.

    Hi,
Sorry to answer to this old topic, but one thing intrigue me.

No - if you look at the object under magnification, you'll see that it's the unexploded 8cm mortar bomb referred to in the old post. The white stuff appears to be hardened soil.
