    This is new to me. I put this up http://www.ww2f.com/roll-honor-memo...roves-mortuary-operation.html?highlight=dover but don't remember hearing about the landfill. Heads should once again roll but it was during the last administration and I believe those responsible have been replaced. We can only hope so.
    And from the Washington Post;
    "" Rep. Darrell Issa (Calif.) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (Md.), the top Republican and Democrat, respectively, on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said they found “appalling” revelations in The Washington Post on Thursday that the Air Force shipped incinerated remains from at least 274 troops to the King George County Landfill before ending the practice in 2008.
    Kirby said there were “real constraints” that restrict the Air Force from notifying relatives of the dead troops. Air Force officials said each of the families signed forms stipulating that they did not wish to be notified if additional remains were subsequently recovered or identified.
    The forms authorized the military to dispose of those remains in an “appropriate manner.” The families were not told that the remains would be cremated, incinerated and dumped in a landfill.
    Lt. Gen. Darrell D. Jones, the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for personnel, said the military wanted to spare relatives additional anguish. “To open up that wound, that would be cruel.”
    He said the Air Force would confirm for family members whether their loved one’s partial remains were put in the landfill if they came forward and requested the information. ""

    Theses last three paragraphs piss me off as much as anything.

    Dumping of partial remains of war dead in Va. landfill spurs wider probe - The Washington Post

    I read this earlier but my mind simply could not believe this. Shame on our government and armed forces hierarchy. A landfill? You mean we can't build a some sort of "shrine' or honorary site for such. I know it's a problem that no one wanted to address, but for "crying out loud", a landfill. That is what leaders are paid to do. Take charge and figure it out. After all, a landfill is simply an appaling solution.

    This is disgusting. I don't care when this happened, I would like to know who the moron was who thought this was a good idea. How in the H-E-double toothpicks is this disposing "of the remains respectfully and with dignity"? It was apparently only done at the Dover Air Base mortuary, but that doesn't make me feel any better about it. It should not have happened at all. For crying out loud, Bin Laden got more respectful treatment than our own fallen troops! :headbash:

    Unfortunately thus story keeps surfacing since 2008 when it came to the public attention. I have to wonder for who and why the story keeps getting dragged up into the press again and again, 4 times this year it has hit the news that I have seen, with most people not knowing or seeing the date it causes instant outrage at the present incumbants in the job.

    It has been portrayed every time I see it as if it is a new case or just been discovered. Internet forums have gone mad about it until someone points out that it is an old story. It was terrible the way the parts were finally disposed of though.

    I believe it keeps 'surfacing' due to new information which keeps being divulged. One point should also be made that while all the articles say the Air Force has dumped remains in a landfill, it was an outsourced company. The Air Force should still get all the blame as obvious oversight was not taken to account. In No Way could 'dumping remains' in a garbage dump be construed as "proper"!
    Having read about this I will add that it really does not surprise me. Today's leadership falls far short of deserving much respect. Something that I have not mentioned on this forum (because I was ashamed to admit what I saw) is at the Pentagon the walkway/road circling the center court was littered with cigarette butts. Not a few! I could have filled a one or two gallon bucket. To see that was also disturbing. I smoked and I would never "Think" of just tossing a butt on the ground let alone in a place that represents so much.

    The reason the story has resurfaced is because there is a current Congressional Investigation into the mishandling of several sets of remains in 2009 (three if I'm not mistaken). Whistleblowers from Dover made allegations about these cases that sparked an Air Force Inspector General Investigation. This investigation started in 2010 and lasted 18 months and substantiated the allegations. The reason the older stories resurfaced, is because they are related to the same facility and tend to indicate that the problems are long term and systemic. It also tends to make the mishandling of the three sets of remains, starting in April 2009, appear not to be an isolated incident.
    I think people should be angry, whoever thought that what they did was a reasonable way to handle the situation sould be charged with criminal stupidity.

    Wow, I guess we know now what our government thinks of our veterans - what an unspeakbly horrific way to dispose of fighting men.

    It just goes to demonstrate that even our troops suffer the squeaky wheel syndrome, if we don't holler about their treatment, benefits, pay, our system falls asleep at taking care of their needs and respect. We have to be constantly vigilant, as of right now there are so many "budget saving plans" that will render their homecoming the poorest treatment in our history if all those reduction plans go through to keep the pentagon in their moneyed interests. Our lawmakers cannot cooperate to focus on their needs and instead create diversions to take media attention away from our most important issues. Our American tradition of coming together to take care of our needs are now made a mockery of in our halls of government. The heros of the halls of government are made out to be the most uncompromising in a government system who's constitution was born of compromise. Will we be tricked into voting for this over and over?........I pray one day we break this cycle to restore many of our values.
