For Christmas I'd like to share this exceptionnal document with you. It is an original menu of the 1943 Christmas meal eaten by pows from Stalag XIA near Göttingen. Note the "dog saussage" and the home brewed "Champagne" traded with Russian pows. The rest looks pretty decent even the "KG purée" ( pow mashed potatoes). Note the "Roosevelt salad" and the Marché noir cake (black market smuggled in cake) Most of all , all guest (45?) signed this document which makes it truly moving.
This one one went unnoticed, I'm afraid, I'd better bump it before the Christmas holidays are over. That will teach me from posting when you are all away.
Very nice Skipper!, I like the art work and the fact they had to scrounge to create their Christmas dinner! At the end of the day they made do with what they had as the company is the most important - the names!
From what I see they were French and Belgians and were helped at least by some Russians (for the Champagne) , possibly by Germans guards too reagarding the black market cake for instance. I am trying to identify the names of these men. I suppose some ingredients came from red cross parcels and that they saved for months to gather enough money/ingredients/ideas for this special meal.
