Well, those dates are bogus. And the United States didn't exist during the Revolutionary War. If the definition is "American Wars", then all those years between 1607 and 1775 would have to be accounted for - most were peaceful. Many of those recent military operations were not legally declared wars nor would anyone claim they were bona fide wars. The Mexican War began in 1846, not 1836 - it lasted two years, not twelve years. There are overlaps of "wars" as well, and some really stupid math. Neither WWI nor WWII nor Vietnam nor the Korean wars were "American wars." I will agree that the American Civil War was both illegal and an undeclared and unconstitutional war.

 

Colonial wars are part of U.S. history, just like the Roman Empire is part of Italian history.

For instance, what about the French and Indian war (1756-1763) ? Not exactly a "peaceful war" and even if one calls it a war between French and British subjects and colonial militias, many native Americans were also involved on both sides. Battles were fought on future U.S. and Canadian territories .

As to declaring wars , Japan didn't bother either at Pearl Harbor.

 

I'd argue that it is hardly "just like" the Roman Empire and Italian history. Although perhaps the period where the Roman Empire was goverened from Constantinople would be a decent analog.

But the dedcision to go to war didn't reside in the US it resided in Britain, France, and the Indian Nations.

They may have waited until after the initial attack but they did declare war. Within 24 hours I believe.

 

IIRC, the Japanese declaration of war was supposed to be delivered to the White House just prior to the actual physical attack, thereby making the attack occur during a declared time of war between the two countries. For some odd reason, the ambassador was late or was delayed, and the declaration was delivered AFTER the attack had already occurred, maybe an hour or so (9-ish AM, Pearl Harbor time). Therefore the US was able to claim moral high ground and denounce the attack as "unprovoked" and "surprise" to the rest of the world.

 

If I recall correctly, the Japanese message was a tad ambiguous. While it was understood to mean war, it did not outright say it. Mothing like FDR's annoucement to congress ("Dec. th, 1941, A date that will live in Infamy...") over the radio.

Actually... the war with Iraq was continuous from 1990 (without a gap) until resumed in 2003. The Gulf War "ended" with a cease-fire rather than a cessation of hostilities. That cease-fire was wholly dependent upon Iraq abiding by the UN sanctions, which he repeatedly violated with impunity during the Clinton era. I've never understood why Bush played that WMD game instead of just pointing out the hundreds of violations (any one of which was a legal pretext to resume hostilities).

 

Following this logic any conflict before 1871 is not part of the German history. The concept of taking only into account the wars after the formal founding of a nation seems quite ineffective for analyzing history of warfare of a country.

Have to agree with you there, Otherwise Australia would technically not have been a participant in the first half of the Second Boer War or in the Boxer Rebellion. I can not wrap my head around the logic that the country could be exempt from a past war if they were formed after the war.. Doesn't matter if the people fighting in that previous war make up the new country. Hell by that logic a country could break its self apart, reform into a new nation and avoid all past legal matters or treaties.

The names of many an Irishman are carved on British war headstones since time Began...Or there abouts.

 

The document you are talking about was not a declaration of war. It simply stated that they were breaking off negotiations.

 

So the varioius Indian wars that predated the European presence in the Americas should be considered when analyzing the history of warfare of current countries? I guess it depends on just what you are doing. If you are looking at the history of warfare for a given area then it makes sense. If you are analyzing the history of warfare of a particular country it doesn't. In the example you give above the German government post 1871 up until the end of WWI was a continuation of the Prussian one that existed and should be considered in that context. That doesn't mean that the current German government should be.

 

I believe that any conflict should be taken into account which made a political and/or cultural impact on a country. A good example from the US perspective is the French-Indian war. Though it is technically not a US war the results of this conflict are as far as I know very crucial to the US history.

Using that logic, then the Sioux nation invaded Mexico in the Mexican/American war? "Nations" are political entities, not geographic entities.

If you'd like to take it to extremes, then Russia invaded the Americas some 12 to 15 thousand years ago; marching all the way from the Bering Strait to Chile.

 

I believe some of you are confused with the notions of political entity and history.
A nation has a history before it is offically recognized as such by its neigbours. A recent example: They've been bugging us with Kosovo long enough before it even became an independent country.
The US Declaration of Independence was written by people who weren't "invented" in "year one" and where did Benjamin Franklin got his idea of unity from ?

 

I think it more a matter of a very poor definition of what the purpose of the exercise is.
If you are just looking at military actions by the US then counting ones that took place before the US was formed or that involved territory that wasn't part of the US at the time is not really relevant. On the other hand if you are looking at how military actions impacted the development of a country they can be critical. The French and Indian war being a great example for the US. In this case it seemed to be that the US has an extensive record of military actions (which is true even without some of the older ones) but the implication was that the US is/was a "warmonger". Simply listing military actions does not support this nor does including military actions prior to the US becoming a country.

 

I don't think that the USA is a warmonger. I was just upset about this post above and wanted to give my definition of an American war.
