WW2 Vet beaten to death In Spokane, WA.

This makes one feel completely ill. I cannot imagine anything more outrageous. I was reluctant to even post it but it is on the national news.

Seems they have caught a 16 year old and have a lead on the other. It is hard to believe one can get through WW2 in combat, get wounded, live a good life and die in such a way. This one has bothered me far more than most random killings that I read about. Most I read about and go on but this one sticks. Then there is the young Australian baseball player in Oklahoma..

 

This is a real heartbreaker. What a couple of scumbags.

I have so many things I'd like to say about this crime, but I don't want to be the one to cause this thread to end up in the Stump.

These cretins could have easily have robbed Mr. Belton without harming him one bit. Instead they intentionally, unnecessarily, and brutally bludgeoned him to death for no apparent reason.

This is sickening and if these thugs get anything less than the maximum penalty, it will be an injustice.

 

This is sad, May this brave man rest in peace and I hope the two scumbags rot in prison.

 

This is BS, total BS. This is why I dispair over the future of our country. I have a new grand baby on the way, should arrive in November and I really worry about the future he'll be facing. Our culture is sick and we have become a nation of excuse makers and enablers.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A second 16-year-old arrested in the beating death of an 88-year-old World War II veteran is scheduled to make a court appearance Tuesday as the first was being held on $2 million bail.
Demetrius L. Glenn made an initial court appearance Monday afternoon. He is charged in Spokane County District Court with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. The charges carry a potential life sentence.

What makes me sick is this comment:

Both suspects have criminal records for assault, he said.
Straub said the case involved twin tragedies.
"It bothers me that a distinguished World War II veteran lost his life," Straub said. But the lives of the young suspects are also likely ruined, he said.

These are not twin tragedies. There is a single tragedy, an 88 year old man was beaten to death and robbed. The two young culprits made a choice. They decided to beat and rob someone they felt was vulnerable. They ruined their own lives, nobody made them do it. Mr. Belton had no choice. he didn't choose to be beaten to a pulp and killed. There have always been criminals, thugs and robbers. What has changed is we now feel sorry for the situation the criminals placed themselves in. I don't. Why didn't society do more to punish them for their previous assault convictions, if they had the current tragedy might have been averted.

Unbelievable. These bastards should never be allowed on the streets again and have to rot in prison for the rest of their pathetic lives (and, preferably, be forced to learn about the sacrifices Mr. Belton made so that they had the honor of living in a free society). Either that, or turn them over to the American Legion and let them do whatever they wish.

You are quite right. The problem is that other morons (and we know they exist) may give it some credence and tarnish a good man's reputation for the purpose of selling papers or getting website hits.
