Which Book should i BUY???

mmm, i am not sure which is a good book,, i dont want it hard to read, and not too long, and something about d-day or the whole normady invasion....

 

G-Banger, I can recommend a few books on the Normandy campaign but I need some more information from you.

Do you want information primarily about the British, Canadian or American sectors? How detailed do you want the book to be? Do you just want a general history or a more in-depth approach? - James

Readers Digest Illistarted guide.

Its actually very detailed but is wrote in a very readable way with easy to read Maps and side pannels about differant stuff.

I recomend it to ww2 experts as a refrence or beginners alike.

 

i was thinking of the d-day novel by ambrose, band of brothers or flags for our fathers

 

D Day first person account book also written by Ambrose in addition to band of brothers, its pretty lightweight but gives a good view of individuals relating to named actions and places.

A good start for a not too heavy introduction..

My own fave is Max Hastings overlord, but presupposes a knowledge of the time and actions, as like all books needs challeging in parts...

D day...you have some reading to do their mate.

Although getting a bit long in the tooth, ( the book not me ! ), a good general and very readable introduction to the events of D-Day remains Cornelius Ryan's ' The Longest Day ' which is full of dramatic first-hand accounts from all sides.

It's still easy to find and will hopefully lead you on to read the more in-depth stuff.

 

G-Banger, both books I would have recommended have already been mentioned. _D-Day_ by Ambrose and _The Longest Day_ by Day. If you want a more in-depth examination of D-Day I would highly recommend _Decision in Normandy_ by Carlo D'Este or _Cross-Channel Attack_ by by Gordon A. Harrison.

Another book worth looking for is _Six Armies in Normandy_ by John Keegan. Keegan's book falls in between the introductory works and the more in-depth studies. - James

 

A fairly recent new book that is good is Robin Neillands The Battle for Normandy 1944. A very good read. revising many of the misconceptions about the battle in normandy. Ambroses' D-Day is a good place to start for the americans on D-Day.

 

Altough Band Of Brothers touches on D Day briefly, it is an excellent account on company level warfare. I highly recommend it.
