"German state prosecutors are preparing to prosecute more than two dozen surviving former German SS guards who are alleged to have worked at the infamous Auschwitz death camp that played a central role in the Nazi Holocaust. The mass circulation German daily newspaper, Bild, said it had tracked down several of the former guards who had been living undetected as various locations in Germany since the end of World War II. The newspaper said all were in their late eighties and nineties and many were infirm. Several claimed to be "unable to remember" the Second World War. Members of their families demanded that their elderly relatives be left in peace. Bild said that several of the ex-Nazi guards had been identified as a result of a campaign launched in Germany earlier this year by Nazi hunters from the Israel office of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre. Entitled "Operation last chance" the campaign is seeking information on suspected Nazi war criminals still alive. The Simon Wiesenthal centre has said it has been surprised by the number of tip-offs it obtained from the public in response to its campaign." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/last-chance-germany-poised-to-charge-auschwitz-ss-guards-9008127.html
The holocaust has become quite an industry. Very profitable for lawyers and other opportunists. Too bad the money and time is not spent on ending present day suffering and crimes against humanity. I am sure present day slavery and mass murder just does not have the romance and profit of the past ones. I wonder when they will start going after the ancestors of nazis. I am sure that is in the pipeline.
Arminiiuss, as much as I loath the complete loss of common humanity that happened in Germany and allied nations before and during WWII, I agree that it is more important to spend our resources dealing with more contemporary problems. (And yes, I know that there were losses of humanity among combatants of other countries, but the topic deals with the holocaust; thus, the limitation stated in my comment.)
Arminiuss you got it wrong, they are not interested in the ancestors of the Nazis, it's the descendants they are interested in, the ancestors are dead and cannot be milked. But every coin has two and often more sides, one of the most chilling experiences in my working life was coming across a very heavily guarded database containing records of financial assets of victims of the holocaust. When whole families were wiped out to the last man/woman/child and all family records dispersed/destroyed the legitimate heirs can possibly have little better than "my uncle twice removed once told my father he had an account with you" to back their claims so any detail of those assets could be used to back a false claim. Reflecting on why that had come about and that there were people ready to profit from it was a sobering experience on the "morality" of the human beast.
