I was in Stalingrad earlier this year and got into converation with Russian veterans about Zaitsev. They believe that this duel between him and a top German sniper did take place, but could not give any name for the German and could't say that they heard about this Duel during the Battle or years later. Certainly there is no official record of Konig either in Russia or Germany, and as Carl said Hetzenauer and Allerberger are known to be the top scoring German snipers, not sure about Hetzenauer but Allerberger had 257 confirmed. Both were Gebirgsjager and both are still alive.Have written to Allerberger earlier in the year,Hetzenauer will not reply but apparently never has. Paul
Neither Thorwald or König existed. If the battle really took place the name of the german sniper remains unknown. Some research indicates that the duel never took place and was simply a propaganda stunt other believe that it did happen. there are sources that say that there were a lot of german snipers at Stalingrad but I haven't come across any names. Paul, it would be great if you could share some of the correspondence with Allerberger since I'm researching about german snipers and sharpshooters. It would be good to not have to question things that already have been answered. best regards/ daniel [ 16. November 2002, 12:24 PM: Message edited by: charlie don't surf ]
Will dig out what Allerberger sent me and post it,although i did not correspond with him in great detail as snipers aren't my thing. Paul
Daniel, Most of what i have on Sepp Allerberger is in German and i will have to try and sit down and decipher as much info as i can for you from the documents i have. Some basic info is; Sepp Allerberger B. 26/12/1924 near Salzburg. Obergefreiter in 7 Kompanie,Gebirgsjager Regt 144,of 3 Gebirgsjager Div. States 2 top snipers were Sepp with 257 confirmed kills and Obergefreiter Mattheus Hetzenauer with 345 confirmed kills.Hetzenauer is recognised as a Ritterkreuztrager whilst i believe Allerberger is not although i do have a photo of him wearing a RK. I have seen something on another Forum, can't remember which included in depth interviews with some of the top German snipers. Will come back with more info if i can, Paul

Hello, My first post here, and I realize I have brought an old topic back, but you guys seem to have a lot of information on snipers, keenly WW2 era. I find WW2 in general very interesting to study in my spare time, and I have particularly taken interest into Russian snipers, However, I can find little information on Ivan Kulbertinov, or just "Kulbertinov" as he is commonly listed. (I use that last name as my alias on WW2 based games in such that I 'snipe' in.. I don't mean it in a disrespectful way, hopefully no one finds it that way, it is actaully out of respect.) Any help would greatly appreciated. I am trying to gather information about a lot of the various snipers, and I am having a difficult time ATM. Thanks, sorry for bringing up an old topic. Also, It was indeed a sad lose when Simo passed away. That guy was incredibly brave, one of my personal hereos as far as courage and dedication goes.
Welcome JR007! Yep, Simo was a huge man even if not so tall!! Did not find much info on the Russian sniper you mention but something here on the overall Red Army snipers: http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/FMSOPUBS/ISSUES/snipers.pdf Some other sources on the threads on Simo and you can find them by using the Search option.
The stats say it all... World War II Name Conflict Service Branch Confirmed Kills 1.Simo Hayha W.W. II Finland 542 Example of the "artist´s" weapons: http://www.kevos4.com/Simo_Hayha.htm
