Good information, Tommy. Too bad it doesn't list companies.

Make sure you list all your findings as well.

Yes your mom was definitely a Cajun girl with a name like Brasseaux ! :)

Your mom reminds me of my grandmother who was the same way as she did not originally speak English but learned as she got older. Until the day she died she never spoke English when she was talking to my grandfather or her sisters. The only time she spoke any English is when she talked to us. She told me that when they were growing up that if they got caught speaking French then they would have to write lines on the chalk board after school “I will not speak French at school”

Wow thanks VERY much for those links ! I stayed up until past midnight last night reading and researching … awesome stuff !!! I think with some of the information I read in those field reports, what I know already and the reports that I have ordered from the National Archives … I’m starting to get a good idea of what possibly happened that caused my grandfather’s death.

I most certainly will my friend ! In fact I think I’m going to start a new thread in the “what grandad did in the war” sub-forum and title it with my grandfather’s name so that I can put updates in there and possibly network out with others who had relatives in the same unit/company/division.

Thanks to all of you guys who have spent your own valuable time to post helpful information and links, I really appreciate it all very, very much. Dang I never thought it would be this time consuming but it’s amazing how much time can go by reading these field/action reports.

Between this forum and all of the links provided along with trying to raise my 3 year old son and take care of wifey … there is not enough time in a day !!!
    Thanks again !

Here is a pic of my son and wifey … they take up all of my “non researching” time ! :)

    Thanks !!!

Hey Slipdigit these were taken last month in May on the beaches of Sandestin, Florida (Miramar Beach)

I've always preferred the Florida beaches in May as the water is crystal clear, free of seaweed & jellyfish as well as 80 degrees water temps !

We're a bit further to the east at Sunnyside/PCB. Leaving tomorrow, unfortunately. Bobby (A-58) drifts over this way about every July and stays at a hotel about 100 yds away.

I've not been to Sandestin since I was college boy, back during Reagan's first term. I am fairly certain that there was excessive alcohol intake at that time, so I don't remember much about it.

I didn't think Louisiana had beaches, just a place where the swamp stops and the Gulf begins.

If you remember correctly it was probably “Destin” where the excessive alcohol intake was taking place as I was there doing the same thing back in the late 70’s and early 80’s

Sandestin crowd is a little more mellow because they are more our age and much less raucous.

Louisiana has nice, clear blue-water beaches but you have to travel out about 30 miles from shore to see them !

We are on the wrong side of the Gulf Stream Current :(

Thanks, Lou. Yes, when I first found those links, I was hoping for more company level info. Every piece of info helps, though.

You are very welcome. Be careful. Once you get bitten by the research bug, it's hard to shake off. :kbpeck: It is quite a bit of finding he pieces and putting them together. It's not very often that one can find an actual narrative account of what happened to their relative. If you're patient and persistent, you will probably get a good idea of the circumstances.

You are a very blessed man to have such a lovely family. Not much more a man can ask for.

We have three beach areas. Grand Isle is the only inhabited barrier island off the coats of Louisiana. Holly Beach is in Cameron Parish, the parish that borders Texas. It got blown away by Rita. Both of these beaches are man made. Fourchon Beach is a mud bank that you would imagine going from march right out to the Gulf. Not much as beaches go, but they got some of the best crabbing around there!

Tommy is correct. Research can be addicting, but it sure is fun!

Oh, it's still difficult. Once a year should do it. ;)

Everything in moderation is the key they say. Key to what, I have no idea. But that's what they say.

    Hey Guys !

Sorry I stopped in for information and then checked out for the last 8 or 9 months but I’ve been super busy with business travel although I know it’s a lame excuse. Also I read so many of the links to other forums that I got temporary burnout !

Well in any case, the information that I got from all the help here on this forum really helped me out ! I finally received my grandfathers files and duplicate medals from the National Archives ! His personal records must have been those that were in the fire as you can see they are copies from burnt pages but it was really interesting.

Here below are the duplicate medals that I received, I was happy to see they engraved his name on the Bronze Star and Purple Heart

The Bronze Star, Purple Heart & Belgian Fourragere

The Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Honorable Service Lapel Button, Combat Infantryman Badge & The Bronze Star Attachment (quadruple)

I’m probably going to start a new thread on “what granddad did in the war” and post his documents and information. It may be boring to some people but others may get some valuable information.

Thanks a ton to all of you guys, the great links and information was invaluable to get my grandfathers records and medals … much appreciated my friends !!!

I'll bet he was most proud of that blue one with the musket on it.

I look forward to your new thread about him.
