Moscow 1941/Forczyk http://www.amazon.com/Moscow-1941-Hitlers-Defeat-Campaign/dp/184603017X Interesting book and surprisingly many details for such a short book. these can be discussed of course: -Hitler´s order on operation Typhoon was only on destroying the Red Army troops and not on taking Moscow. - Hitler was ready to stop after Kiev and continue next year but the generals made him continue the attack to Moscow - only 2 divisions out of 7 Siberian divisions fought in the Moscow front so the Siberian troops were not the "miracle force" to stop the Germans - Guderian´s bigger fear was lack of fuel than the Red Army troops he was facing when operation Typhoon started
Just bought Walter C. Langer's "The Mind of Adolf Hitler; the Secret Wartime Report" at an absurd price. ($4) Such books about Hitler are extemely cheap in Turkey. I don't know why. Basicly the book is based on a report issued for U.S. government during the war. I could not find much about this book on the internet. I'll write more when (if) I finish reading it.
I JUST picked up John Keegan's "The Second World War" Havn't started it, but..I'll dive in tonight!!!!
The Battle of Kursk By David M. Glantz & Jonthan M. House What can I say, brilliant from start to finish.
Just finished Peter Longerich´s " The unwritten order " on Hitler´s part in Holocaust and how he was so "invisible". Very interesting, I recommend. Also bought Nikolai Obryn´ba " Red partisan". http://www.amazon.com/RED-PARTISAN-Memoirs-Resistance-Fighter/dp/1844154289 And almost forgot:
A bit different from what I´m used to reading but very interesting: David Fletcher´s "Mr. Churchill´s Tank" (Schiffer) and "Devil´s Paintbrush" by Dolf Goldsmith the story of the Maxim gun (!)
re-reading some secret stuff that will be included in a future title this spring 2007 about the night air war .... ...... . . . .
I bought 'Dunkirk' quite recently and have yet to read it - it looks very interesting and was well-reviewed when it came out....
Now I'm reading The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas. It's a vintage first edition, published long before the death of Franco, and therefore the book underestimate the numerical importance of slaughters, as the author admited (last edition takes these into account). Still, this book is often considered as one of the very best references on the subject. I find it quite good and well documented.
Still on Schweinfurt - reading 'Wrong Place ! Wrong Time !' by George C Kuhl - the disastrous story of the 305th BG on October 14th, 1943.
George Nafzigers long OOP Lutzen and Bautzen pushin Napoleon out of Germany in 1813, slowly .... the title commands some pretty hefty prices if you can find a copy now of above US $ 100.00 easily going to do some re-reading of Lorant/Goyat volume 1 JG 300
Just got: Hermann-Leverenz etc FW 190A Francis Mason hawker Typhoon and Tempest Finished among other books Albert Zoller´s book on Christa Schroeder ( Hitler´s secretary ).
Just got an original 1940 edition from Josef Grabler (Luftwaffe reporter) "Mit Bomben und MG's über Polen" . It's is a (biased) journalistic account of the campaign of Poland. What makes it interesting are the small stories of evaded pilots etc.. There are also dozens of high quality pictures. One problem: it's written in Gothic letters.
I also have that one, Skipper ! I bought mine at a militaria fair in Bastogne some years ago. Obviously, I cannot read a word of it ( ) but the photos are very interesting indeed and the front cover is embossed with a pair of stylized Stukas. ( My copy also features one of those Eagle-and-Swastika rubber stamps inside the cover, with 'Inf.Ers.Rgt. 216' ..... )
