10 Things That I'm Dislike About The U.S.

Speaking as an American, I can not rightly disagree on most of Christopher47's "points."

Of course, there is the inevitable "however."

3/ DEREGULATED WALL STREET - Regretfully it's not any better, or that much more different, than a "regulated" Wall Street.

5/ THE DRUG WAR - Ain't the Drug War my friend...making heroes out of crooks...John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone...any of these names ring any bells.

6/ GUN CONTROL - A google earth map and a bunch of tanks go from house to house, searching...Yeah, that worked out really well for Federal and local law enforcement at Waco, Texas. 70 some dead, including two pregnant women and several small children and minors.

9/ AMERICAN CARS - But my Toyota Corolla doesn't need me interfearing with it at all. I drove it across our interior, four days, without once checking anything except the tires. Thats reliability. And it's Japanese...Don't know where you live, but I would check to see that your Corolla is actually "made in Japan.", as many aren't. Still, the two "made in Japan" 1986 Honda Preludes that I owned were great! Drove the first till someone rear-ended it, and the second had about 200,000 miles on it when it went to the junkyard.

 

Can we all agree that the Paraguayans are a surly bunch?

 

And, lastly, threads like this proving contentious?

We discuss issues realted to conflict in all four corners of the globe. Much of what comes out is overly contentious to begin with.

If we cannot discuss a few domestic issues that, in the wider sceme of things, are about a tenth of the contention that the regular threads drag up every day, then we are not exhibiting much in the way of self control.

I am usually the whipping boy. I would like an 'official' list of required reading, and sources that forum members do not consider 'outdated'.

This is just to show you that controversy and the definition thereof is entirely in the eye of the beholder.

And BTW...this is post number 23.....it's almost a hot topic....and not a tear yet from anyone. Martin's pessimissm is unfounded. We ARE reponsible and forgiving posters after all. Doesn't that make you feel good? And after all the dire predictions!

Why do you take everything personally? Do you not think its possible to have an intelligent debate on an issue here if its WW2 related? I've read a few of your postings and I didn't see anything that offensive directed at you but you seem to take everything as a personal attack.

"Free-Fire Zone" and "Stump" debates are an exception to this. They typically go nowhere and descend into mud-slinging contests. That's why I normally don't follow them beyond the first page or two. If you say something controversial that's solely based on your own opinion (going from door-to-door confiscating guns fits the bill), you should expect things to get personal. This was the trend long before you showed up.

And no, this isn't a personal attack.

I'm not even really sure who or what they are. My first thought when hearing the name is "they were a race in one of the Star Trek series, what's that got to do with anything?" of course I still remember reading a post not too many years ago where some one compared (the morals?) of someone or some organization to Paris Hilton and I was scratching my head wondering how a hotel in Paris had anything to do with morals.

I haven't watched more than a few seconds of WWF usually as someone else in the house is "scanning the dial". When I was in highschool (several decades ago) I did watch professional "wrestling" some. I noticed that the wrestling in Portland seemed to look more "real" than that in Seattle. Then realized it was the same "wrestlers". An education in what a good film/camera crew and editor can do (it had a lot to do with camera angles) so there is something that can be learned from it.

Well it doesn't really. That's not to say that better regulation isn't needed which is not necessarily the same as more regulation. It's not an easy balance to get right especially as people varry considerably in what they consider to be right.

Interesting that no one I know or talk to seems to care for him at all. I seem to recall he's a musician of some sort but I haven't heard anything he's done and am not particularly interested in hearing it.

The first sentnece is a pretty clear indicator that you don't understand the nature or history of the problem. One of the big problems with drugs is that some people believe that they are "wrong" and others don't. That makes finding a solution very difficult. Expecting lawmakers to make difficult and potentially unpopulalr choices isn't very realistic either.

"Rap music" is an oxymoron for the most part. It's also clear that for the most part rap doesn't help. How much damage it does is an open question. I suspect it's more of a symptom than a cause though.

I don't like "gun control" either unless you are talking about the ability to hit what you are aiming at then it's a good thing. The NRA isn't holding anyone ransom. What right do people have to let their unjustified fears control what others do? There is NO right to live in a society without guns especially where gun owners were there first. It's far from clear and indeed the evidence is to the opposite that Americans giving up their guns will make them "better off". That you put "simplicity" as a primary motivator is incredible (I could add some adjectives to that but ....). Using tanks ot enforce said collection? Have you lost your mind!!!! That wouldn't be making America a better place to live it would be destroying it.

Don't watch them. Don't have a problem with those that like to doing so though.

There's no real lack of it. You may not find it at one or even any of the KFCs but you can still find good fried chicken here in the US.

Personally I find that opinion rubish. The US can and does still make good cars. I usually drive our Ford and it's been a very good reliable vehicle for the last 10+ years. Oh and some of those Tyotas are made in the US in some cases with more US content than some of the big 3.

Ketchup spicy? Unless you get a special variety hardly. Now I like it on some things but am more likely to use a good Louisiana sauce or spicy mustard or maybe even a Thai peanut based sauce ....

I did notice a signficant trend in your dislikes most of them are things you can just ignore. If others like them so what? I'd put items 1, 2, 4, 7, and 10 in this catagory. Several of the others point to items where there is a philisophical difference between you and many of not most Americans and I don't see anything that indicates any real understanding of them on your part.
